    An explorer tried to win a prize
    in 1850/1860 the government held a competition. The first explorer to reach Adelaide to Darwin would win a lot of money. An explorer named Stuart tried to win the prize. He reached the centre of Australia and planted the British flag. But up near the great Tennant Creek, the traditional owners of the land/country Attacked Stuart's camp with fire and spears. The explorer was frightened so he went back to Adelaide.

    The history of Papunya

    This book tells the story of how Anagu from five different language groups came to live together at Papunya. From the time of first contacts with exploreres, missionaries and pastoralists, through to the Papunya art movement and Warumpi Band, this multi-layered text finally leads us to the unique environment that is Papunya School. As an example of two way learning, it is a profound metaphor for reconciliation.

  • Attack on Barrow Creek

    In 1874 there was A attack on Barrow Creek 250 km north of Alice Springs. One white man died and so did an Aboriginal. The government sent out soldiers on horses, who killed about 50 of the Aboriginal people.
  • Anangu began to find it harder to get bush tucker.

    For Anangu it got harder to live in Papunya because: There were animals, it was harder to get bush tucker and were confused to see the fences.
  • Pastor Strehlow took charge of the mission

    in 1894 Pastor Strehlow came to Hermannsburg and took charge of the mission. Over the next three years, a church was built.
  • World war 1 started: Australia at war with Germany

    Germany and Australia had a big war of claiming the land and it was the first ever World war 1 that started in 1914. The was also a School that started in Stuart. Bungalow was established.
  • Bad drought and Pastor Albrecht arrived at Hermannsburg.

    In 1926 the Anangu community was struck by a drought right through the centre. It became harder for them to survive in the desert.
    They were not able to live through a dry season for very long. As the drought wore on, many Anangu people start going to the Hermannsburg mission of food. At first there were these Arrente people from nearby. Soon there were more Pintupi from the far west as well.
  • Settlement established for Warpiri at Yuendumu

    After world war 2 finished, the Federal Government decided to get more involved with Aboriginal administration. They wanted the ration depot at Haasts Bluff to become a proper settlement. In 1946, they paid for drilling a bore.
  • People move to Outstations

    In 1978, The anangu people reached Watiyawanu (Mt liebig.) They also wanted to get away from the government supervisors. This led to the outstation movement.
  • Papunya Power Dispute

    In 1992, the government suddenly said that the Anangu people would have to pay electricity bills every three months. The Papunya people asked to pay by putting in tokens into a meter box as they used the power, but the government denied it.
