Macon Georgia was Founded
Macon was founded off the banks of the Ocmulgee river, and was named after the Indian scount sent there to set up trade. -
Mercer University Founded
Mercer University was founded in 1833 by Georgia Baptists. The school was named for Jesse Mercer, Baptist leader and the first chair of the Mercer Board of Trustees. -
The Native Americans were removed from Macon
The Native Americans were forced west by settelers moving west through the Lottery System and settling in Macon. If there were any Creek left, they were removed in 1836, when they fought the settlers in the Creek War of 1836. -
Wesleyan was Chartered
December 23, 1836 Wesleyan College was chartered by the state. The school opened its doors on January 7, 1839. -
The Central Railroad
The Central Railroad completed a line from Savannah to Macon which linked Georgia's agricultural wealth to the coastal ports for shipping. -
Battle of Dunlap Hill
The Battle of Dunlap Hill was fought on July 30, 1864 in Macon,
Georgia. This was a confederate victory and lead to the defeat and capture of Union General, George H. Stonemen. -
Tubman Museum Founded
Richard Keil made a down payment on a dilapidated former warehouse in downtown Macon. The museum was named after arriet Tubman who led hundreds of slaves to freedom. Over the yars the museum has grown to become the largest institution of its type and has bcome a key enducational and cultrual resource for the whole southeast region. -
Otis Redding Tribute
Bradley Cooley and his son Bradley Cooley Jr. created a life-size bronze statue of the music icon Otis Redding. They modled their statue after Otis's song "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay.This statue is located on the banks of the Ocmulgee River in Macon, where Otis grew up, was discovered in the music world, and was where he had been raising his family before his death in 1967. -
The Otis Redding Foundation Established
The Otis Redding Foundation was established in 2007 in Otis Redding's honor by his wife, Zelma Redding. This Foundation was dedicated to improving the quality of life for the community of Macon through the education and empowerment its youth.
