Napier
“Napier’s Bones” is created. -
Jacquard
The Jacquard loom is created. It is the first machine with the ability to be programmed. Based on the pattern of punched holes on paper, the machine controls a loom. -
Charles Babbage
Charles Babbage creates his adding and multiplying machine. It can be programmed by pushed cards or operator input. The output was recorded on metal plates. -
US Census
Hollerith creates a punched card calculator which is used to count the US Census. -
Analytical Engine
Babbage’s son finishes his father’s idea, and successfully makes the Analytical Engine. The machine can add numbers up to 40 digits, complete complex mathematical equations, store data, and use punched paper or tape input. -
Vacuum Tube
The vacuum tube is created by Lee De Forest. This made electronic computers possible. -
Computer Language- Grace Hopper
Grace Hopper starts to write computer languages. She also came up with the term computer “bug”. -
The First Transistor
Bell Laboratories invents the transistor. -

Business Computers
Computers begin to integrate into businesses everywhere. The price of computers drops as they become more widespread, and the number of users increases. -
Cray I
The Cray I is the first supercomputer available to the public. It could complete 150 million calculations per second. -
Apple II
Steve Jobs and Steve Woznaik release the Apple II. -
IBM with Intel processors
1978- Intel introduces the 8086 microprocessor, and IBM’s sales of personal computers skyrocketed.
