The Lockheed A-12 was a single seat spyplane that lead to the development of the SR-71 Blackbird. -
SR-71
The Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird took its first flight. It was very revolutionary because it was the first plane to incorporate modern stealth technology and design. It flew over mach 3 and no SR-71 was ever shot down. -
the "Hopeless Diamond"
Lockheed Skunkworks built the first prototype stealth plane called the "Hopeless Diamond" because if was diamond shaped and looked too hopless to fly. -
Faceted surfaces
Lockheed Skunkworks found that an aircraft with faceted surfaces could have a very low radar signature. -
F117
"The Hopless Diamond" prototype became the very sucessfull F117 Nighthawk Stealth fighter. -
B2
the B-2 Spirit took its first flight. This was Americas first stealth bomber and the first plane to utilize the "flying wing" concept developed in the 1940s. -
Operation Just Cause
F117s were taken into combat and returned successfully. -
Operation Desert Storm
F117s were used once again and were the only jets allowed within Baghdads city limits. The F117 proved successfull yet again. -
F-22
The F-22 Raptor took its first flight. This was the first stealth plane that held supersonic capabilities. -
X-32
The X-32 was Boeings entry into the Joint Strike Fighter Program, but later Lockheeds model, the X-35, was chosen instead. -
F-35
The F-35 Lightning is the new model of the X-35. The air force is currently testing on it. It is meant to be a multi-role stealth fighter and bomber, even though we still use the B2 and the F117.
