ARPANET

Apr 7, 1969

Advanced Research Projects Agency is the first ever to go online. It connected four major universities throughout the United States. It was designed to aid in research and education, as well as government organizations, in the scenario that if the United States were to be under attack and other forms of long distance communications were destroyed, the internet could suffice.

E-Mail

Jan 1, 1972

Ray Tomlison is credited with the creation of electronic mail. It was his idea to use @'s to represent networks.

TCP/IP and FTP

Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol is created and it becomes the standard for sending between computers. This is the official launch of the internet. One feature, the File Transfer Protocol, allows users to download files from remote computers.

DNS

Jan 1, 1984

The Domain Name System is created, which created network addresses that are used to identify websites. All the domain names are followed by a extension such as .com, .net., and .gov.

Birth of Ads.

Jan 1, 1985

Quantum Computer Services launches, and later becomes America Online. Offering "electronic bulletin boards", they were some of the first, if not the first people online to have advertisements.

Internet Worm

The internet gets hit with a major virus for the first time and it was not prepared for it. Known as the "Internet Worm", it shut down 10% of internet servers all over the world. It works by disrupting code by placing itself where it should not be and causing things not to be able to function.

Dial-Up

World.std.com is the first ever provides dial-up internet.

World Wide Web

Also Tim Berners-Lee comes up with the idea for the World Wide Web, and what it does it connect pages on sites with each other through hypertext, and it would have a graphical interface.

Archie Query Form

A revolutionary way to search the internet, Archie Query Form was created. A user could type text into a computer and an algorithm would scan the internet and output websites it believes are the closet to what the user has searched for.

Said to be the first online social media, it allowed the users to upload a profile about themselves and connect with other people using the website.
