  • Musket activation locks

    Musket activation locks
    During the 19th century many military inventions happened. One such example is the improvement to the switch from flintlock to percussion lock muskets which were far more reliable. The first reason is because when the flintlock got wet or damp it severely hampered the weapon's ability to function. This was fixed using mecuracy caps to create a spark. This mechanism was more expensive than the alternative but was still adopted into the British army and stayed in service until 1853.

    IRON GARRISON
    They used iron garrisons during the early 19th century. They costed more than wooden platforms but lasted centuries longer with some around today. Dispite this fact they were not widely used as they were very heavy and therefor comebersome to transport.

    Enfield Model 1853
    The Enfield Model 1853 the service rifle for the British empire under rule of Queen Victoria. This rifle would play a role in many conflicts such as the Crimean war, the American Civil war and the New Zealand Land War. This was a very popular choice during the time period and is why It was wielded by both sides of the Us Cvil war, although mostly by the confederates. This rifle was especially useful to the Confederates as they were able to use Union rounds.

    Gain twist rifling was used both in rifles, cannons and even on ships. This new tech delivered more accuracy but with added complexity and therefore cost.

    During the civil war many naval technologies appeared such as the Iron clad, which dramatically changed the face of naval warfare forever. It was a massively armoured ship which you would need a lucky shot to an important area to sink. Both sides during the civil war had their own designs. The Union's Iron clad sat low in the water with a deck mounted gun which made it perfect for use in rivers.The Union used their's to strangle the Confederation by blockading their ports.

    Repeating Rifles
    During the civil war many technologies appeared such as
    repeating rifles in the north. These were able to fire many shots without reloading and therefore were able to put many shots down range compared to what the south had. An example of this was the Spencer Repeating Rifle which was adopted by the cavalry. It was lever operated and utilized a magazine which were both new technologies. The south could not manufacture similar weapons because they lacked the industry and knowledge to do so.
