Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (PL 93-112)
- Legislation has been brought into play when the rights of individuals with disabilities have been denied or interfered with.
- it’s illegal to deny participation in activities or programs especially because of a disability.
- Under this Act, a child may qualify additional support for problems such as failing grades, a pattern of suspensions, and chronic behavior.

Public Law 94-142
- This law was passed in 1975, but didn't take effect until 1977
- Was designed to assure that all handicapped children have available to them a free appropriate public education which emphasizes special education and related services designed to meet their unique needs.
- Federal government authorized the spending of up to $3 billion by 1982
- However, by 1990, the government was only spending about $1 billion a year.

Public Law 99-457
- Says that Public Law 94-142 was misnamed and was not meant for children of all ages.
- PL 99-457 provided the opportunity for all handicapped children by allocating federal funds for the states to develop plans and programs for children and their families from birth on.

The Javits Act (PL 100-297)

Americans with Disabilities Act of 1992
- July 26, 1990 it was passed through but didn't come into effect until 1992.
- It extended the civil rights to persons with disabilities. Rights are guaranteed without regard to race, color, national origin, gender, or religion
- IDEA, and Section 504, make clear that American society is determined to see that children with disabilities have equal access to educational resources and cannot be discriminated against on the basis of their disabilities.

Public Law 107-110: No Child Left Behind Act of 2001
- President Bush signed this Law
- This has an impact on all schoolchildren and a special impact on children with disabilities.
- The purpose was to hold schools and educators responsible for bringing students to a minimum level of competency.
- It requires schools to present test data to prove their effectiveness. 5.It created a different problem for students with special gifts and talents in that the tests has no challenge and the standards can usually be reached with barely any effort.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act
- The Goal was to stimulate economic activity in a number or areas to ensure the long-time economic health of our nation.
- Resulted in large funds provided to the states under IDEA
- Infants and toddlers with disabilities from birth to age 2 received $500 million in federal funds and children ages 3 to 5 were provided $400 million in federal funds.
