World War I begins as Austria declares war of Serbia
World War War I begins because Gavrilo Princip, a young man part of the Black Hand, shot Archduke Ferdinand and his wife Sophie. They were killed at point blank range. Austria used this as a reason to punish Serbia and the war began. -
U.S. Enters the war
In 1917, a German submarine, had sunk the British ship Lusitania (unrestricted submarine warfare). Some US citizens were killed along with British people. The Americans were outraged and President Wilson sent a protest to Germany. In just one day the US joined World War I. -
Armistice signed as Allies defeat Central Powers
On November 9th, 1918 Kaiser Wilhelm II stepped down and Germany declared itself a republic. A Germany representative signed an armistice with a French commander to agree to stop fighting. The war came to an end. -
Gandhi leads Indian camapaign of civil disobedience
In 1920, the Congress Party decided not to corporate with the British government. They endorsed civil disobedience and deliberately disobeyed an unjust law to achieve independence. This act was led by Gandhi after Britain decided not to punish the British soldiers at the Amritar Massacre and to weaken Britain's rule over India. -
Mustafa Kemal transforms Turkey into Republic
After Greek soldiers invaded Turkey and threatend to conquer it. Mustafa Kemal led Turkish nationalists in fighting back the Greeks and their backers, the British. After winning independence Turkey owerthrew the last Ottaman sultan. Kemal became the new president in 1923 and Turkey became a Republic. -
Mao Zedong heads Long March
Mao Zedong and 100,000 Communist forces fled Jiang and his army. They began a 6,000 mile journey called the Long March in 1934. Finally after about a year Mao and roughly 7,500 Communists settled in caves in northwestern China away from the nationalists.
