    Mackenzie King did not think the economy was in that bad shape around election time. He thought that the Liberal party was going to win the election with ease. a group of political leaders meet in Alberta to talk about the unemployment problem developing over Canada. They then went to Ontario to let King know about the problem. Since most of the unemployment at the time were more to the west and not in Ontario and Quebec King did not think the problem was that severe.

    During the 1930's farmers in the Prairies had to abandon their homes to escape the massive drought and had to try and find jobs in cities even though there is an economic depression. In Canada this mostly took place in saskatchewan. Even though all the crops of farmers in the East were destroyed another big problem was Canada's manufacturing centres were also destroyed causing many people to lose their jobs which affected production by a third between 1929 and 1932.

    Relief Camps
    Relief camps started to pop up across Canada in 1932 because of the large amount of jobless people roaming around in the cites. Men would to tasks such as clearing bush, planting trees, building roads, and rise public buildings. In return they got a room to sleep in, health care and 20 cents per day for their hard work. As of 1932 there were 70,000 people unemployed and working in relief camps across Canada.

    Around 1932 Provincial and some local governments started using a relief system which was anywhere from 19$ in the Maritimes to around 60$ in Alberta for families who could not get by on their own. Men who were not married are could not get this. Lastly, the payment was a form of “Vouchers which could be traded for food, water, and cloths.

    In 1933 on the progressive side of politics in canada there were only two major parties. The first one being Tim Buck the leader of the Communist party which was seemed as odd and extreme, or they could support Woodsworth who had no party. Woodsworth finally decided to that a national effort to unite the left of the political spectrum and on July 22, 1933 a national convention was held for the CCF (Cooperative Commonwealth Federation) that took place in Regina.

    Unemployment rate hits 30% of labour force. One in five Canadians had to survive on the government relief system to stay alive. Even with Relief plans intact unmarried men are not able to accept relief so this was one huge factor that our economy was not going to get any better. We had all these young men who had no money so they couldn't end up working. This is why the unemployment rate would remain above 12% until the start of World War two in 1939.

    very police that was passed during the convention is known as the Regina manifesto. People such as labour unions, farmers, worker guilds, supports of nationalization of industries, doctors lawyers, and all descriptions of those who did not consider themselves Liberals or Conservatives. One of the firsts test the C.C.F was apart of was in the British Columbia provincial election in 1933 where it became the opposite party and then repeated in Saskatchewan where it also became the opposition.

    Adolf Hitler was the main representative of the Nazi Party in the 1930s. The Nazi told germans how Germany was not treated fairly after WWI and when they signed the Treaty of Versailles it caused the economic depression Germany has been going through. Many Germans thought Hitler was the person who was going to solve Germany's problems but in the end he would only make them worse. Hitler promised to end reparations, create jobs, and rearm germany. Hitler was elected chancellor of Germany in 1933

    Franklin Roosevelt takes office in 1933. In America the great depression is really hitting people hard. So this is why Roosevelt in his first 100 days in office passes the New Deal legislation. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation is created to insure all deposits at banks. This helps the supply of money in America’s financial system.

    In April 1935 people started to hear about a gathering of worker in British Columbia relief camps so more than 1400 men went to the city leaving their camps to vancouver. The Unity League and WUl (Workers Unity League) led the strike with meaning of getting ottawa to take more action, providing additional compensation, better work options and improved camp conditions. There were around 20,000 men participating in the riot.

    August 22, 1935 Aberhart took his seat and Office of Premier of Alberta. Sadly, Aberhart realized that Alberta did not have enough money for his “social credit” plan and tried to print his own money.

The Depression with so many people losing jobs, people started to turn to their faith as they tried to fight through the heavy economic state. Aberhart thought the solution was for Alberta’s monetary system to start flowing money and stimulate the economy. He thought that every person in Alberta, man,woman, or child, should get 25$ a month.     In 1935 the economy was looking like it was going to recover and signs of hope around the country began to appear. Mackenzie king had been working hard to rebuild the Liberal Parties and also created a slogan “It's King or Chaos” while all the other smaller parties such as the CCF, Social Credit were not really looked at yet. On the day of the election the Liberals had 171 seats while the Conservative party fell heavily with only 39 seats in some places.

    In 1929 when the depression started the economic damage that took place was way too much for provincial governments. This would mean for the next 4-6 years, most governments were thrown out of office when an election was held. Quebec along with most other provinces suffered high unemployment. Quebec was different for who they blamed for the crisis. Maurice Duplessis blamed the english business community, which is why he formed a new party called Union Nationale.
