On October 24, Black Tuesday, stock prices dropped making sellers panic to sell their products, with any money the could get. By October 29, stocks completely collapsed and banks started to call in loans. -
Rugged Individualism
President Herbert Hoover said "...the lesson should be constantly enforced that though the people support the Government, the Government should not support the people. Federal aid in such cases encourages the expectation of...care on the part of the Government and weakens the sturdiness of our national character..."
In his speech, Herbert Hoover talks about rugged individualism, which is an idea that each person should help themselves and not depend on the government. -
Hoovervilles
More than 3.2 million people were unemployed, but since Hoover was still optimistic. Many unemployed were forced to live in a shantytown made out of cardboard, boxes and crates, called Hoovervilles. -
Bonus Bill
A payment of funds to veterans of World War I, which was passed in 1924. -
Banks Collapsing
Banks started to collapse since many people asked for loans but never payed them back. Once the banks collapsed, many people rushed to take back their money and hide them, fearing of losing their savings. But for some, their savings were lost. -
Bonus Army
Since Congress denied the request for immediately payment of the bonus, even after 15,000 veterans marched to Washington, D.C., the veterans were ordered off all government property. Which led to a bloody riot, so President Hoover ordered the army to clear out the veterans. As the army charged, they sprayed tear gas into the crowd, causing the Hooverville in flames and two dead babies at the nearby hospitals. -
FDR V.S. Herbert Hoover
When the election came around, the people chose FDR with hopes things would be better. Since they didn't want Herbert Hoover to be president again. FDR received 22.8 million while Hoover received 17.75 million votes. -
A New Start
FDR gave a long speech that million to zillion of people listened to through radio. FDR talked about how the New Deal will better the Great Depression and make sure not another one going to happen, by using the "remedies". One of his plan was to have a bank holiday to get banks on track and to gain the trust of people about putting their money in the bank. -
The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)
The Civilian Conservation Corps was established. It was designed as a relief and employment program for young men. -
Dust Bowl
The federal government establishes the Soil Erosion Service, which was necessary from the years of drought and dust that plagued the Southwestern Panhandle states. -
Dust Storm
There was a three day dust storm that blew 350 million tons of soil off of the terrain of West ad Southwest.
