The Great Degration and Other Events

  • Intro Part I

    Intro Part I
Introduction. Picture this: A ship arrives to Virginia. On board, the cargo included food, supplies. And slaves. They were brutally plucked from Africa, and sent to colonies in the New World. This isn't the first time, however. Ever since when early civilization raised armies to conquer, the pillaged peoples ended up as servants to the victors. Anthony Johnson was one such slave. See Part II for his story.

  • Arrival of Pilgrims in Plymouth

I don't exactly when, but 102 pilgrims arrived at Cape Cod in 1620. This was the start of colonization in the US

    Intro Part II Anthony's story
Anthony Johnson, orignally Antonio, was one such slave. He was a victim of the Bautista piracy, and brought to Virginia in 1620. he got out of slavery circa 1640, and became a land owner. He bought his wife's slavery. They eventually had 4 kids. In 1649 Anthony flees to Maryland to escape horrid slave laws in Virginia. His children's land eventually returns to the British planters and the crown. As the century progresses, it became harder for his descendants to have rights.

    Anthony's slavehood

This is the estimated time of Anthony Johnson's slave bondage.
  • No guns to the enslaved

    No guns to the enslaved
This law shows signs of diminishing progress. It is the beginning of the Great Degration. Here it is:

All persons except negroes to be provided with arms* and ammunition or be fined at the pleasure of the Governor and Council. (* weapons, like guns This shows diminishing progress by saying that the enslaved Africans can't have guns. Now, the slaves have to rely on their masters for food (hunting) and protection (Indian attacks). So that is like their 'payment' for working

    English Civil War

A time of turmoil, and a change of command in Mother England
  • Court Case F

    Court Case F
The Johnsons are excused from taxes after a terrible fire. In that fire, they lost a lot of their possessions. Slaves didn't pay taxes, yet taxes are one of the burdens of free men. Anthony and his family payed taxes, and were on the same level of the middle class slave owner until the fire.
  • Court Case C

    Court Case C
Anthony Johnson is petitioning for his slave, John Casar. A certain Robert Parker detained John, despite the fact he is a freeman. They, despite Parker being white, and Christian, returned Casar to his master. This is one of several court cases in history won by a free black man
  • Casual Killing

    Casual Killing
This act says (in a summarization)
If a master punishes his slave by whipping, and the slave dies, that is the fault of the slave, not the master.
This act has 2 meanings. One is that the slave dies during the whipping. the other is death by wounds, later on. The diminishing progress is that a punishment is almost lethal now. The slaves' lives are now in the hands of the master. This also a scene of 'degration', and slaves at this point are being treated more like property than human.
  • Period: to

    Salem Witch Trials

A time when 2 young girls started a witch hunt. Many were accused, and several died. " Nobody expects a Spanish Inquisition!!"
  • Hog Stealing part 2

    Hog Stealing part 2
(This is the continued part of hog Stealing. Read that before this.) The slave would now be publically ridiculed, and worthless to the master. This is proof that the slaves are no longer humans, but on the same level as a couch. And this is torture! So not only are they property, they are in physical pain!
  • Hog stealing; ultimate fail

    Hog stealing; ultimate fail
Apparently, stealing was a federal offence!
If a slave commits hog stealing,he will be carried before the justice of the peace of the county, then beatten on the bare back with 39 whiplashs. Then, after the second time, the slave spends 2 hours in the pillory WITH HIS EARS NAILED IN!!! THEN THEY CUT THEM OFF!!!!
This law has diminishing progress by way of another punishment gone rogue.
At this time, please feel free to upchuck. Not on the computer screen, please. Thanks. XD

    The Rev. War

A war against Britain, with their German allies, and us with our French allies. And we won, of course.
  • Declaration of Monarch Annihlation

When our founding fathers came together to write the Declaration of Independence. To summarize it: WE ARE FFFFRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!
  • War of 1812

The Revolutionary War, part 2. A war started by oddly enough, drafts. The Americans faced off the British with the British's many Indian allies.
  • American Civil War

A time when slavery, state boundaries, and independence created a bloodbath
  • Conclusion

As the American Civil War draws to a close with Appomattox Court House, over 620,000 men lay dead on the battle feilds, and the slaves walk free from the horrors of slavery. Yet, in around 1619-1705, it was a sociatal norm. Many founding fathers hated slavery, but they had slaves, for they couldn't afford indentured servants. Yet, sadly enough, slavery's ugly head still remains. And yet we will see to that it will be abolished.
  • Conclusion part II Anthony's Ending

The Johnsons had it fine when free. But as the years progressed, the grave of degration was getting deeper. This was leading up to the mess we know it now. Anthony fled to Maryland to get away from the madness, then returned to his home. His sons and daughters had a harder time with rights after Anthony's death. The actions of our parents will affect our children as the saying goes. We hope to make a bright enough future for our kids. Hopefully, history should never have a repeat of this.
