The prime minister Lon Nol overthrew Sihanouk in a coup. He sends the army to fight the North Vietnamese in Cambodia. Over the next few years, Cambodia looses terriotry to the North Vietnamese. -

Pol Pot - Leader of the Khmer Rouge
During this time period Pol Pot was the leader of the Khmer Rouge and caused deaths of a total of 1.7 million people. -
Lon Nol Overthrown
Pol Pot, leader of Khmer Rouge, overthrewn Lon Nol. The Khmer Rouge had led to hundreds of thousands executions. Other starved or died from diseases or exhaustion. -
Cambodia is renamed
The Khmer Rouge group decided to rename Cambodia Kampuchea. Sihanouk resigns and Khieu Smaphan becomes head of state. Also Pol Pot becomes prime minister. -
Vietnam Invades Cambodia
Vietnam invade Cambodia seeking to end Khmer Rouge border attacks. -
Pol Pot and Khmer Rouge Flee
The Vietnamese are anle to take Phnom Penh. Pol Pot and Khmer Rouge forces flee to the border regian with Thailand. The People's Republic of Kampuchea is established and many elements of life are re-established. -
Genocide
The Genocide Tribune come in and find Pol Pot and find him guilty of the Genocide, yet he did not appear in court or serve any sentence. -
Vietnamese Leave
Vietnamese finally withdraw and leave Cambodia. -
Peace Agreement
A peace agreement was signed in Paris on Comprehensive Political Settlement and Cambodia conflict by the UN. -
Kmher Rouge - Guerrilla War
Khmer Rouge soldiers continue to wage guerrilla war. This lasted for about five days. -
Khmer Rouge Outlawed
Khmer Rouge has been outlawed by the Cambodian National Assembly. -
Khmer Rouge Forces
The Khmer Rouge force a spilt, defecting the government in return for amnesty. -
New Law
The Cambodia's National Assembly passes a law to create a court that will try/deal with the serious crimes of the Khmer Rouge. -
Argeement with the U.N.
There was an agreement with the UN on how the intrnational company would help participate in the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia. The pact was then amended in 2004 -
Sihamoni Becomes King
King Sihanouk gives the power to his son. The real political power, though, is held by the president, Hun Sen, who was a former Khmer Rouge officer. -

The court has now finally become fully operational. -
20th Aniversary of Sihanouk
During a ceremony to mark the 20th anniversary of his return from exile, Sihanouk vows not to leave Cambodia again despite his health problems. -
Headed back to Bejing
Sihanouk starts to head back to Bejing for medical treatment. -
The Death of Sihanouk
Sihanouk has now passed away in Bejing. -
Pol Pot dies - Civil War Ends
On April 15, 1998, Pol pot dies and the civil war in Cambodia finally ends. -
