Baby Gabriel is comes home
A baby named Gabriel is brought home to Jonas. Jonas notes that the baby's eyes are light-colored like Jonas'. Jonas feels a connection with the baby. -
Apple Changes
Jonas notices an apple change to color for a split second. "The apple had changed. Just for an instant. It had changed in mid-air." -
Ceremony of Twelve
Jonas attends the Ceremony of Twelve that decides the job of all children of the right age. Jonas is skipped over, and he begins to feel scared and anxious. Jonas is later told that he will be the new Reciever. -
Jonas Receives First Memory
Jonas recieves his first memory. It is of snow and sledding. Jonas is amazed He also recieves the memory of a sunburn. This is Jonas' first time experiencing pain in a memory. -
Jonas' Isolation
Jonas asks if he could possibly have a family. The Giver explains that while it is possible, it would be difficult because isolation is required. Jonas begins to isolate himself, and walks up and down the river. "He saw the familiar wide river beside the path differently. He saw all of the light and color and history it contained and carried in its slow-moving water; and he knew that there was an Elsewhere from which it came, and an Elsewhere to which it was going." -
Jonas Bonds with Gabriel
Jonas begins to bond with Gabriel, who is sleeping in Jonas' room. Jonas is the only one who is able to soothe Gabriel. Jonas passes memories on to Gabriel. -
Jonas Experiences Great Pain
Jonas asks The Giver to give him a memory with pain. When he receives the extreme physical pain, he is shocked. He realizes that all other emotions he had experienced to this point was dull and meaningless. -
Jonas Sees Playing War
Jonas spots his friends playing a war game. He nearly breaks down in tears because he is remembers a memory that was passed. He is upset that he is unable to describe to his friends why they should not be doing what they are. -
Jonas Witnesses a Baby's Release
Jonas finally gets to witness his dad "releasing" one of the twins. The Giver explains to him that realeasing is really lethal injection. Jonas is upset believing his father to be a murderer and liar. -
Jonas Begins Plotting
Upon hearing what releasing actually is, Jonas begins plotting his escape. He plans to leave on the day of the Ceremony of Twelve. -
Plans Change
Jonas discovers that Gabriel will be "released" soon. He then takes Gabriel and escapes the town. He spends the next few days dodging planes and trying to keep the two safe and alive. -
A Sled Ride to Freedom
As their food rations become scarse and they continue to battle the weather, they find a sled on top of a hill. This sled appears to lead to a city with lights and noise. Jonas and Gabriel begin the descent. Jonas hears more noise on his way down, but he think that may just be an echo.
