They broke into the Versailles palace and demanded the king and his family leave.

King Louis tries to Escape France
Nobles and their supporters were not safe in France.
King Louis tries to escape to the Netherlands.
King did not succeed and was returned to Paris under guard.
This event was important because it gave more power to the revolutionists because the Kings' authority was powerless. -

Constitution limited the power of the monarchy.
King had only power to enforce laws.

France Declares War Against Prussia
Prussia and Austria urged Legislative Assembly to restore the monarchy.
National Assembly declares war on Prussia and Austria.
Prussian military was advancing on Paris.
The revolutionists invaded the King's palace in Tuilerus and imprisoned the king and his family. -
National Convention takes office
It abolished the monarchy and made King Louis a common citizen and prisoner.
Declared France a republic.

Reign of Terror Ended
Robespierre died by the guillotine when the National Convention had him arrested.
National Convention drafted a new plan that placed power in the upper middle class.
They created the Directory (which is a two house legislature and five men that were moderates).
The Directory named Napoleon Bonaparte to command the military.
