Meeting in Versailles
King Louis delayed dealing with money issues until there was no money left.The second estate forced him to call a meeting of the states general,an assemboly of representitives from all three estates. -
National Assembly
On June 17th 1789, they voted to establish the National Assembly. This proclaimed sto end the monachry. -
No bread
Bad weather and severe shortage of grain caused wide spread crop failure resultiong in starvation. -
Fleeing Paris
Many supporters of the monarchy thought France was unsafe and left the country. In June 1791, the royal family tried to escape from France. -
Guillotine
Priar to the introduction of the Guillotine many French crimanals had suffered through horrible punishments in public places. -
Death Of King
The National Convention reduced Louis XVI's role from king to common citezen and prisoner. Convention found Louie guilty and sentanced him to death. -
War
During the war, in Febuary 1793, The convention ordered a draft of 300,000 French citezens between the ages of 18-40. By 1794 the army had grown to 800,00 men and women. -
Reign Of Terror
Robespierre became leader of the committee of Public Safety. For the next year, Robespierre governed France virtually as a dictator , and the period of his rule became known as the Reign Of Terror
