Louis XVI is crowned king of France. He marries Marie Antoinette and becomes allies with Austria. -
American Revolution Begins
The year before the American Revolution, tension was rising between England's Congress and American citizens. Parliament passed many laws on taxes including the Sugar act and the Stamp act. A revolution finally broke out to try to gain freedom from England. -
Calling of the Estates-General
The king called all of the Estates together to decide on who gets taxed and who doesn't. The clergy and Nobility ended up working together, so the people felt like they did not have a say. After the calling, the citizens of France were furious. -
French women force Louis XVI to leave Versailles
Women began marching through the market places of Paris because of the scarcity of bread. They walked to Versailles and forces Louis to leave his home. -
Formation of the National Assembly
This was a revolutionary assembly created by the 3rd estate. Also, it got rid of the absolute monarchy and gave the people power like they wanted. -
The Tennis Court Oath
The people of the 3rd estate, who were part of the national assembly, took an oath not to separate, and to reassemble wherever circumstances require, until the constitution of the kingdom is established. This was a major step in the revolution in France. -
Attack on the Bastille
The prison in Paris known as the Bastille represented power for the nobility and clergy. When the third estate stormed it they showed that they have power. -
Declaration of war against Austria
The people of the Revolution wanted war because they thought it would unify Europe and wanted to spread the ideas of the Revolution. On April 20, the legislative assembly declared war on Austria. -
The National Convention is Formed
The Convention was formed when the people decided they couldn't work with the king, so he was put on provisional suspension. They tasked the National Convention with creating a constitution with no monarchy. -
Louis XVI is executed
Louis XVI was executed by the guillotine at the Place de la Revolution in Paris. The king's death was a huge milestone in the revolution. -
Reign of Terror
During the reign of Terror there were more then 16,000 death sentences out on citizens. Everyone was executed by the guillotine. The reign of terror was led by Robespierre. -
The Thermidorian Reaction
The Thermidorian Reaction refers to the remaining period until the National Convention was superseded by the Directory. Many of the revolution supporters came under attack. -
The Directory is formed
The directory was a five member group who governed France. They lasted for four years and kept order in France. -
Napoleon takes power
Napoleon overthrew the directory and came into power. He was a great leader in the country and achieved many accomplishments. -
Napoleon invades Russia
Napoleon attempted to defeat the Russians in their own land. He ended up losing the battle because of the harsh, cold weather in Russia. -
Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo
Napoleon was defeated at Waterloo and banished to an island called Elba. He later on died on St. Helena from a stomach ulcer.
