Estates General of 1789
First meeting of the Estates-General since 1614. A meeting of representatives for each estate realm. Third Estate was given double the amount of delegates, but were told votes were by estate not "heads." -
National Assembly
A group of Thrid Estate delegates, clergy, and nobles that met outside of the Estates-General. They claimed that all taxes had been illegally imposed. -
Tennis Court Oath
Third Estate menbers were locked from out of the from the Estates-General meeting. The delegates went to have the meeting in a tennis court near the Palace of Versailles. There the National Assembly made an oath to make a new constitution for France. 576 out of 577 members of the Third Estate members signed it. -
Storming of the Bastille
The National Guard attacks the prison Bastille. -
National Constituent Assembly
Established July 9, 1789. Became official government shortly after the Storming of Bastille -
Feudalism Abolished
National Constituent Assembly abolishes Feudalism in France -
Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen
Declaration of Rights of Man and of the Citizen is published. Serves as a new body of a Constitution. -
Women's March on Versailles
A large of women marched to the Palace of Versailles because there was a shortage or food and they wanted bread for their families. -
French Constitution 1791
New constitution in France. Changed government from an absolute monarchy to a constitutional monarchy. Limited King Louis XVI's power. -
First Meeting of the Legislative Assembly
First meeting of the Legislative Assembly. Succeded the National Constituent Assembly. -
France Declares War
France declares war with Austria. A few weeks later Prussia joins forces with Austria. -
Royal Family Taken as Prisoners
Miltias went to the Tuileries Palace and killed Swiss Guard who protected the King. The royal family was taken as prisoners. -
France Becomes a Republic
The Convention, new government, made a new constitution. Abolished monarchy. -
Execution of Louis XVI
After trial, he was found guilty of treason. He was executed at 10:22 Janurary, 21, 1793. His last words: "Gentlemen, I am innocent of everything of which I am accused. I wish that my blood may be able to cement the happiness of the French."
