Formation of the National Assembly
Members of the Third Estate, were determined to change the system and create a constitution that set out equal rights for all men. They declared themselves the National Assembly. It became an assembly not of the Estates but composed of "the People". -
Declaration of Rights of Man and the Citizen
This document was supposed to remind the people of the responsibilities that they had. It compared the hgiher class to the lower class. The slaves and women were not included in this document. There were 17 laws. -
Abolition of Nobolity and Titles
People just started going by their last name, instead of things like Duke. This was just another way for people to be seen as equal. Your name was all that you had. You could ruin your name by doing something wrong, but no one was higher ranked than you. -
Civil Constitution of the Clergy
Constituent Assembly prohibited the taking of religious vows. They regarded the church as a form of public authority. This document went toward setting up of a French national church. -
Constitution of 1791
The French constitution was created by the National Assembly during the revolution. About two-thirds of adult men had the right to vote for electors and to choose certain local officials directly. The constitution lasted less than a year. -
The Beginning of the legislative Assembly
These people believed that you could not trust the king. They were divided into groups. They were known as the bourgeoisie and the democratic. The total assembly was made up of 725 members. -
France Goes to War Against Austria
The French government declared war on Austria. As Prussia was allied with Austria, France was fighting a war against both countries. -
First Session of National Convention
The National Convention ordered that French generals, in the occupied areas, should dissolve the old governments, Thus revolution spread in the wake of the successful French armies. -
Execution of King Louis XVI
He was convicted of high treason. King Louis XVI was executed. He became the first person to die in the Reign of Terror. -
Commttee of Public Safety
The job of the committee was to keep one person from having too much power. This protected newly established republic against foreign attacks. It was first made of 9 people. It slowly grew to 12. This committee had supervisory power over the Judicial and Legislative efforts.
