The first three wheeler

This was the first three wheeler it caught the eye of many people whe it was made because of its improved stability

Penny farthing Bike

1870

This bike had a much larger front wheel and a very small back wheel. this proved to be very unstable, and unsafe as it was hard to get on and off of

The safety bike

1885

safety bicycle invented by John Kemp Starley characterized by two wheels of the same size and a rear wheel connected and driven by a chain. This made for a more efficient bicycle that could use smaller wheels. This invention was named for the obvious reason that it was safer than the penny-farthing because of the lower center of gravity

The internal Hub

1903

In 1903 the internal hub was created to change the gear ratio without changing sprocket sizes

The kids Bike

1920

The Kids Bike invented. This design, weighing in at around 65 pounds, mimicked aspects of the motor vehicle as the automobile became more desirable than bikes.

Springs and fat tires

1930

Schwinn adds spring fork and fat tire to handle the abuse of teenage boys. This later became the preliminary design for the mountain bike

The first true bike

1961

This was the first bike with wheels of the same size that had pedals and could steer. The major downside of this bike was that there were still no brakes

Electric Bike

Modern bikes now have electric engines to help the rider get from point a to point b easier and faster
