After the Punic Wars
There was always a divide between the patricians and plebeians, but it was made worse after the Punic Wars. Many of the plebeians who were farmers before the war came back and found themselves in debt and living in poverty.Small farms were getting forced out of business. Many plebeian farmers sold their farms and headed to the city to find work. Finding work was difficult, because slaves did most of the work. If free men were lucky enough to have jobs they earned very low wages. -
