The fall of Rome

  • Period: 341 BCE to 338 BCE

    The Latin War

    The Latin war lasted from 341-338BC. Rome invaded Latin land and took over. Latin and their allies weren't allowed to make treaties with others. The last straw for the Latin countries was when they had to provide men for the Roman wars so they rebelled against Rome.

    The first Punic War

    the Punic wars are a series of three wars between Rome and Northern African cities. The first was fought for the control of the Island of Sicily. Lasting 23 years it's the longest Punic war.

    The Second Punic war

    This war was actually the invasion of Italy. This war lasted for 17 years. This was another failed attempt to take over Italy.

    The Third Punic War

    Rome successfully invaded and took over Italy. The Romans enslaved the Italians and destroyed the Italian city.

    Reintroduces Monarchy to Rome

    Agustus won the wars and instead of having a joint rule he looked for people that would be okay with Roman senates serving his new regime.

    The third century crisis

    Rome suffered major political stability and the average rule was no longer than 18 months. There are many small reasons for this crisis but the main three are based on Roman attacks. The first is attacks from the east where the Romans were fighting against stronger forces. The second is from the North where the Romans encountered large and dangerous barbarian confederations some of them being the Franks, Alamanni, and Goths.

    General Diocletian
    General Diocletian tried to bring Romes political order back by dividing Rome into two. He also heavily taxed farmers and forced them to stay on their land.

    The Late 300's

    In the late 300's Rome invited Germanic tribes to enter Rome but the people of Rome treated them cruelly. The tribes fought back and killed the Eastern Emperor Valens during the Battle of Adrianople. In 410 Goth King Alaric moved further west into Rome and took over leading more tribes into Roman borders.

    Romulus Augustus

    Romulus Augustus came to power at the age of 14, so his dad took care of the political decisions. The eastern side of Rome revolted in august of 475. Western Rome fell in 476AD after 500 years of ruling. Romulus's dad was captured and killed but Romulus was spared and sent to work for the legions.
