Heart-Lung Machine
In 1953 the first heart-lung machine was designed by Dr. Jon Gibbon. It was used in an open-heart surgery and showed that it was successful. The new machine showed that it could temporarily be used as a mimic of the heart.

Partial Heart
Dr. Michael DeBakey successfully impanlanted the first partial artificial heart in 1966. This device assisted the left ventricle. This was very helpful because many heart diseases are caused by failure from the left ventricle, so it prevented less disease in the patients.

Partial Heart Continued
Instead of having a machine to help out the heart, it actually replaces the one side of the heart. This was first implanted and tested on a dog. The dog only lived 3 days with the new heart. -
Succesful Heart Implant
Dr, Christian Barnard performans the first successful human-to-human heart implant in 1967. This heart was actually implanted into the human instead of testing it on animals. The patient died 18 days after surgery.

Heart Implant
In 1969, Dr. Denton Cooley implanted the first complete heart into a patient. However, the patient died a day and a half later. Instead of being just half of the heart being replaced, the whole heart is being replaced. It is also now connected to the major blood vessals.

Blood-Flowing Heart
In 2000, a man in Israel received the first artificial heart. However, this heart could maintain blood flow and generate a pulse. It is called the Jarvik 2000. This heart was different from the previous one because it has more qualities that an alive human heart has then the previous version. A hydraulic pump moves the blood throughout the heart.

in 2001, the first “self-containted” mechanical heart was transplanted into a patent. This heart is not only powered by a battery but it is also different from the other versions because it is much smaller, having only about the size of a softball.
