Claudius Galenus, through many disections states that blood travels through veins, that blood is formed in the liver, and that arteries and veins are completely distinct. This was strong ground to keep the study of blood flowing into more detailed discoveries. -

A young 21 year old by the name of Jan Swammerdam is said to be the first person ever to observe and describe red blood cells at a microscopic level. -

Marcello Malpighi, a Italian anatomists observes the capillary system using the rudimentary microscope. This was a great advancement in the history of blood. -

Richard Lower, from England performs the first recorded blood transfusion on dogs. This was the first recorded acount so perhaps there could of been one way before. -

Anton van Leeuwenhoek elaborates on red blood cells, giving a more precise description and saying their size is "25,000 times smaller than a fine grain of sand." -

William Hewson gets into more detail of blood coagulation. The substance is a key component in the clotting process, known as fibrogen. -

Philip Syng Physick performs the first human to human transfusion, however, his work is not published. NOT PUBLISHED, NO GOOD. -

James Blundell performs the first PUBLISHED human to human, hermano to hermano blood transfusion. The blood was from donors. The patient was thought to be okay and show improvement but then later died! -
1874- PLATELETS
Sir William Osler theorizes that the bulk of clots in blood vessels are due to small fragments from bone marrow. They are now called PLATELETS. -
1901- Blood types
Karl Landsteiner states that there are 2 groups of blood. There is A, B, and C. But for some weird reason, he changed C to O. These are still used in present day. -
1902- ONE MORE!
Karl Landsteiner colleagues Alfred von Decastello and Adriano Sturli discover a fourth blood group. It was AB. The four blood types these men discovered are how we categorize ourselves to this day. -
1907- Be careful..
Dr. Ludvig Hektoen recommends other doctors to start checking the blood of donors. He recommended it so there wouldn't be signs of incompatibility before transfusion. -

Researchers Albert Hustin and Luis Agote discover that adding sodium citrate to blood will prevent it from clotting. These findings were later published. -

Francis Peyton Rous and J.R.Turner develop a citrate glucose solution. This allowed blood to be stored for future blood transfusions. -
1917- War is a time of need
Dr. Oswald Robertson establishes the first blood depot during world war I. The blood type he stored was type O. -
1922- 1937 ' Blood banks'
During these years, many doctors and researchers established blood transfusion banks in which they stored blood. These banks were emerging all throughout the world. -

Dr. R.E. Stetson and Dr. Philip Levine discovered an unknown antibody in the blood of a woman. The discovery of Rh blood group is presented! -
1941-1947 Blood Drives
Organizations start organizing blood drives in support for war causes. These organizations helped save thousands to millions of lives. -

Dr. Carl W. Walter devolps a plastic bag to store blood. Prior to this, blood was stored in glass containers but they weren't very efficient. This simply impacted blood storing in a positive way. -

Dr. Max Perutz identifies the structure of hemoglobin. Hemogoblin is the protein within red blood cells that carries oxygen. -

Dr. Baruch Blumberg identifies a substance on the surface of the hepatitis B virus. The substance triggered the production of antibodies, which leads on to identifying infected donors. -
1981- AIDS
The first accounts of the sydrome aids were found. They were first found in gay men. This disease came to be one of the deadliest in mankind. -

The United States and France decide to share credit. Along with the sales of test kits for the virus. -
1987-2002 MORE CASES
More blood infectious diseases are found. Tests are conducted that immediately detects the genetic material of viruses like HCV and HIV. -
C 350 BCE - Aristotle hit the lotto!
Aristotle, a Greek philosopher stated that the heart is the central organ of the body and that is is the base of the soul. Aristotle disected many animals and studied the anatomy and physiology of the bodies and at the end of his studies he concluded that the heart is a three chambered organ in animals, along with humans.
