Origins of Lipstick Lipstick continued it's evolution in Egypt from 2000 BC to 100 AD. Women began to use a seaweed mixture to tint their lips reddish-purple, and the famous Cleopatra even used crushed ant eggs and carmine beetles to make her lipstick. Lipgloss was created using fish scales to add shine. These materials were aquired through trade or were readily available and did not require manufacturing. -

Lipstick Timeline The first lipgloss was created by Max Factor in the 1930s. His purpose for inventing this was to make actresses' lips more dramatic for black-and-white movies. It was successful among both celebrities and everyday women because of the shine it gave to their lips. -

Lipstick Timeline After the failure of the Rouge Baiser, many other chemists attempted to create a better, long lasting lipstick fomula. Hazel Bishop, an American chemist, created a more successful non-smearing lipstick that stayed longer on the lips. Unlike it's predecessor though, it was not as difficult to remove. -

The Bonne Bell Company The first flavored lipstick was created in 1973 by Bonnie Bell, a cosmetics company. The line was called "Lip Smackers" and it was first released in Strawberry, later introducing more flavors. "Lip Smackers" became a popular item among younger girls and teenagers.
