The Evolution of Cheer leading Uniforms

  • 1980

    Uniforms in the '80s and '90s weren't very different in style than
    today's cheer leading uniforms.
  • 1930's

    1930's
    In 1930 uniforms were matching collared shirts, slacks, and a belt. Depending on how the weather was, they would sometimes wear turtlenecks and a sweater.
  • 1940

    In 1940 more women got involved. They wore long cool skirts,
    collared shirts, and cardigans.
  • 1950

    1950
    In 1950 the cheer uniforms became more of a team look. Everyone wore matching long sleeve shirts with sporty stripes down the sides tackle twill with the teams letter on the front and megaphones.
  • 1960

    1960
    As cheerleaders became more active and it was socially acceptable to have shorter skirts, the cheerleading uniforms completely changed in style. No longer wearing tucked in blouses or button up shirts, cheerleaders of this decade wore breathable cotton based shirts, sweatshirts, crew neck sweaters, pants, and skirts.
  • 1970

    They introduced bare midriff tops, short shorts and white boots. After stretching social boundaries and dress code limitations, the rest of the cheerleading uniforms industry quickly followed suite. Saddle shoes or Keds were replaced with athletic tennis shoes, shell tops were introduced, patch lettering became more ornate, sweater fit became tighter.

    2000
    Uniforms in the 2000 became a spandex material. This made doing more activity easier such as, stunting, tumbling, etc.

    Uniforms were very plain still, and most didn't wear long sleeves.
  • 2015

    2015
    Cheerleading uniforms now are very different, depending on your squad. They vary from cropped to full body suit.
