There was conflict over if slaves counted as people so the three fifths compromise was settled -
the missouri comromise
Since Missouri was added as a slave state it would make the balance between free and slave states would be messed up so as a result the missouri compromise was made where another free state was added with it. -

When California wanted to become a state there had to be another compromise so when they joined they took away slavery in Washington D.C. -
