Russia closed all highways, railroads and canals because they wanted Berlin all to themselves. They figured this would cut the people living there, of food and needed supplies. Then, resulting in the US, France, and Britain leaving Berlin. The Allies solution was to fly the needed supplies into Berlin by plane, this became known as the Berlin Airlift. -

The Soviet Union successfully launched Sputnik, the world's first artificial satellite. It took only 98 minutes to obit the Earth. This marked the start of the space age. -
