Anthony Johnson's Progress
This part of his life shows progress of Anthony Johnson -
Anthony Johnson {Introduction}
In early Colonial Virginia, people are just trying to settle in. People are not yet juded by their skin color but by how much property they own or how many animals they have. Anthony Johnson was captured as a slave and had eventually came to the early United States. He had then converted to the Christian religion and they Siete Partidas a Christian slave or Indentured Servent may not be held captive as on for life. Anthony was then only counted as a slave for 20 years and then gained his freedom -
Antony Johnson acquires Land
On the Tenth of July in 1645 Anthony Johnson acquires land in Northampton County. Anthony Johnson has been freed from bondage with his wife and was looking to buy some land. Anthony Johnson had bought land from Captin Taylor with an agreement that said, "I may work when he please and play when he please." Captin Taylor was very kind letting Anthony have half of his corn field to start out with crops to sell for some money to spend on whatever he wanted for his land. -
Anthony Johnson owns Slaves
On the 8th of March, 1654 Anthony Johnson petitions for his slave, John Casar. John Casar, a negreo, had been owned by Anthony and had run away and captured. Mr, Robert and George Parker, White Englishmen, had heard that John had agreed with Anthony to be his servant for 8 years and been kept longer. Later that same year, Anthony came back to court and proved them wrong and John was relaesed again to Anthony's ownership. Anthony Johnson (a negro) had just won, in court, against a white man. -

Diminishing Progress of Anthony Johnson
This shows laws that have been made by the Englishmen that show how they go from fear to power to control to greed. -
Baptisum does not Exempt from Bondage
In Anthony Johnson's life he has became Christian, and according to the Siete Partidas all Christians must be freed and may not serve for a lifetime as a sevant /slave.Then comes a law that says that baptisme of slave doesnot exempt them from bondage.This is a very important time because now the Englishmen are losing lots of slaves for bondage. They're gettting mad enough to go against what the had originaly believed was morally right.This mean that even if you already were baptised, no freedom. -
Apprehession and Suppresion of Run-Aways
At this time alot of the slaves were relising that they had to find a way out of slavery before it was to late, which the chance was very slight. The English men noticed that more and more slaves were running away, with Native Americans helping, to find freedom. A law was then made saying that if they ever found a runaway slave, who then resisted arrest, it was then made legal to kill or wound that person. This law also stated that Native Americans must not help them in finding freedom. -
Punishment of Slaves for Hog Stealing {Part 2}
You would then be punished (in a very harsh, unhumanish way) having 39 lashes well laid on to your bare back, and before court of record stand two hours in the pillory (place where you get whipped) and have both of your ears nailed to the wall and at the end of the two hours then have your ear cutt off close by the nails. They would not only treat you as property but now aren't even treating you as a tortured animal. -
Punishment of Slaves for Hog Stealing {Part 1}
Livestock was very valuable at this time. Many slaves knew that and were stealing hogs. This was making the Enghlish men very angry because they had worked hard to take care of the livestock. They decided to make a law saying that if someone said you stole a hog, you would be severely punished. All that would have to happend is someone report a hog stolen, someone blame you, and you would have no say in it. -
{Conclusion Part 1}
Anthony Johnson had made so much progress in his life and had worked so hard for everything he had and to provide a great future for his family. Then when the English men come to relize that all of the other slaves are now noticing that they can do things just like him to get free, they made these nasty laws and many others like these, to be greater than them or to have more power and you can easily see how they go from fear to power to control to greed. -
{Conclution Part 2}
These laws have taken away everything away from Anthony Johnson and his sons and wife. Just think. What would you do next? What would you want for your family in the future? Would you have done if all of this happend to you? What if you were Anthony?
