Parris discovered Betty, his niece Abigail, Tituba, his black slave from Barbados, and other girls dancing like heathen in the forest outside of Salem at midnight. After Parris came out of the bushes, Betty lost consciousness and has remained in a stupor ever since. -

Act 1 Page 465-471
John Proctor and Abigail are alone in the room with Betty. Proctor questions Abigail about Betty's illness, suspecting that responsibility for "this mischief" probably lies with Abigail. Denying any involvement in witchcraft, Abigail states that she and the girls merely danced in the woods. Abigail asks Proctor if he has come to see her, but Proctor denies it. the conversation reveals that, Abigail and proctor had an affair while Abigail lived and worked in the proctor household. -
Act 1 pages 472-485
Reverend Hale arrives at Parris' house. Hale prepares to look at Betty. Hale tells everyone in the room that he will not examine Betty unless they accept the fact that witchcraft may not be the reason for her ailment. Parris tells Hale about Abigail, Betty, and the others dancing in the woods. Hale questions everyone. -
Act 2 Page 487-493
Elizabeth wants Proctor to expose Abigail as a fraud. But she suspect Proctor may still have feelings for her. John continues to deny his feeling for Abigail. John is also worried about how he will convince the others that Abigail tells him he had naught to do with witchcraft when they were at Reverend Parris house because the two of them were along. -
Act 2 Page 494-498
Reverend Hale arrives to investigate and question the Proctors. Reverend Hale asks Elizabeth and John to recite the Ten Commandments John Proctor is able to reside 9. They also find a puppet (doll) inside the house within middle stack inside of it. -
Act 2 Page 499-503
Shortly after Giles Corey and Francis nurse arrive in forming Proctor that their wives have been imprisoned on charges of Witchcraft. Moments later the authorities come and take away Elizabeth as well. Angry Proctor demands that Mary Warren helping expose the other girls as frauds, even if it means confronting Abigail. The current drops as Mary sobs on the floor "I cannot, I cannot," over and over again. -
Act 3 Page 505-511
John Proctor brings Mary Warren to the court in an attempt to expose Abigail as a fraud and the rest of the girls as liers. Danforth assures them the court will dig out any concealment or falsehood. -
Act 3 Page 512-517
Parris told Danforth the truth that he caught the girls dancing in the wood. But he had not told Danforth that he caught the girls dancing naked. He fears that his daughter and niece dancing in the woods would ruin his reputation amongst the other Reverends. -
Act 3 Page 518-525
To test john proctor claim danfort summon Elizabeth Proctor and ask her if her husband is a lecher. she lies and says no because she wants to protect him. so danfort dismisses the charge reverent Hale starts to believe Proctor. Abigail goes back to her trick of acting like Mary Warren is threatened -
Act 4 Page 527-530
Abigail Williams and Marcy Lewis have stolen money from Parris and disappeared. Parris wants to postpone the hangings. And he fears a riot will erupt in Salem if John Proctor, Rebecca Nurse, and Martha Corey hanged. -
Act 4 Page 531-533
Reverend Hale tries to get them to confess he doesn't believe they're guilty but he feels responsible for the trials and thinks it will be his fault if any of them die. If they confess he thinks they won't be hanged. Danforth and Parris decide to let Elizabeth talked to John to see if she can get him to confess. -
Act 4 Page 534-539
John announces he will confess. After much arguing he signs his confession but will not allow it to hang publicly and tears it up he is worthy of an honorable death instead of living a lie and him along with Rebecca Nurse and Martha Corey walk to the gallows.
