Spanish Settlement

French Settlement
First French attempt at a settlement made by Jean Ribaut on Parris Island. Built a fort named Charlesfort. Settlement fails within a year. Similar French attempts to settle in Florida bring about bloody Spanish massacre and equally bloody French reprisal. -

Spain bulids costal forts
Spain decides to build coastal forts to discourage French settlements. First of these, Fort San Felipe later rebuilt as Fort San Marco), is built near the ruins of Charlesfort. -
New Name
In 1629, Charles I, King of England, granted his attorney general a charter to everything between latitudes 36 and 31. He called this land the Province of Carlana, which would later be changed to "Carolina" for pronunciation, after the Latin form of his own name. -
Prince takes the throne
Cromwell dies and his son, Richard, is too weak to take power. The Prince of Wales, Charles II, assumes the throne. -
Founded
The Colony of South Carolina was the eleventh colony to be founded in the United States out of thirteen original colonies. It was founded by The Eight Lord Proprietors of England. Before and after Carolina was seperated into two colonies in the 1690's, North and South Carolina, South Carolina served as a buffer between Northern English and Southern Spanish colonies just like the north. -
Carolina Colonists Sail
Carolina colonists sail from London on three ships: the Albemarle, the Port Royal, and the Carolina. -
Colonists Sail Destroyed
November 2 - The colonists reach Barbados, where their ships are struck by a hurricane. The Albemarle is destroyed and the Port Royal and Carolina are damaged. -

African slaves White Servants
1698 - October 8 - Increasing importation of African slaves prompts a law providing cash incentive for bringing white servants into Carolina. -
War
A pan-Indian alliance rose up against the settlers in the Yamasee War (1715–1717) and nearly destroyed the colony. But the Yemasee were defeated and, with exposure to European infectious diseases, the backcountry's Yemasee population was greatly reduced.[7] -
