The Korean War was the first armed conflict of the Cold War. It being the first armed conflict made it very significant in future events of the Cold War. The war also shows the first armed attack by communist forces on a demovratic country. Hungarian Revolution
The Hungarian Revolution was one of the major causes leading to the Soviet Union strengthening their resolve to keep a tight grasp on the territories they took over. Protestors and spearatists were exectured in Hungary for attempting to revolt. The Hungarian Revolution is seen as the key cause of the building of the Berlin Wall, as the uprising put nervousness into the Soviets minds and so they decided to build the Berlin Wall out of fear. -
Space Race
The Space Race is an important event in the Cold War. The Space Race was a race on the development of technologies that would allow them to travel to the Moon. These rapid development of technologies meant that weapon technology was rapidly improving, this was especially evident in long range nuke exchange. These developments in technology meant that either or could fire nukes at each other, this created greater tension in the Cold War. -
Bay of Pigs
The Bay of Pigs Invasion was a failed military invasion of Cuba made by a CIA-spnsored paramiliary group. This was widely seen as a failure because the mission did not achieve its indended goal, as well as all of the invasion force being captured or killed. The intervention made Castro halt US-Cuba cooperation to almost zero, and considered the USA a partial enemy. -
Berlin Wall
The Berlin Wall was a barrier made by the German Democratic Republic on 13 August 1961. Its aim was to completely cut off West Berlin from East Berlin. This wall really split the two Germanies apart, it made sure that no influence was being made from either Democracy or Communism on either side of the wall. Due to this fear of the opposing political influence infecting their population, the two nations set up defences against the other, and the Berlin Wall was therefore known as "Death Wall". -
Cuban Missile Crisis
The Cuban Missile Crisis was a 13-day confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union. The conflict was over Soviet ballistic missile bases being developed inside Cuban territory, this put a spike of panic in the USA's mind and they wanted them instantly taken down due to danger of the Soviets bombing the US. This event again put a huge dint in both Cuban-US relations, as well as Soviet-US relations, the USA now knew of the danger that they could be in during the Cold War.
