The three leaders Churchill, Roosevelt, and Stalin met. They agreed on a couple things which included freeing people from Nazi rule and that Europe should be allowed to set up their own democratic and independent governments. -

Churchill gave the speech named "The Sinews of Peace" which became known as the Iron Curtain. It set tone for the early years of the war. -

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was created. Also known as NATO. -
Members
The original members of NATO consisted of USA, UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, Lexemburg, France, Canada, Portigual, Italy, Norway, Denmark, and Iceland. One this day Greece and Turkey joined. -
Death
The death of Russian communist, Joseph Stalin. -
Warsaw Pact

The Warsaw pact became into being. It was named after the meeting, between the Soviet Union and West Germany, that was held in Warsaw. It represented the Soviet Union's response to joining NATO. -
Hungary
Students and workers took to the streets of Budapest and issued their Sicteen Points. It included but did not limit to personal freedom, more food, the removal of secret police, and the removal of Russian control. -
Berlin Wall
The Berlin Wall was put up overnight separating East and West Germany. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
President John Kennedy notified Americans about the presence of the missles in Cuba. He decided to enact a naval blockade around Cuba and made it clear that the U.S. was prepared to use military forces if necessary. -
Deals on Missiles
The Soviet leader Khrushchev sent a message to Kennedy offering the removal of the missiles only if Kennedy promised not to invade Cuba. -
Visiting
East German government announced that GDR could visit West Germany and West Berlin. -
Wall Destroyed
The Berlin Wall was detroyed. It paved the way for German reunification. -
Unwanted and Ceased
The Warsaw Pact was later unwanted. It ceased to exist on this date, however most of its members joined NATO including the Soviet Union. -
The End
The Soviet Union dissolved into its component republic. The Iron Curtain was lifted. This was the mark of the end of the Cold War.
