  • Berlin Airlift

    Planes delivered food, fuel and other goods to people living in West Berlin.
    Germany was divded into serveral different districts by French, British, Americans, and Russians.
    Russia cut off Berlin's access to their supplies.
  • Communists Take Over China

    Mao proclaimed the beginning of the People's Republic of China on October 1.
    Mao delivered his speech from the Gate of Eternal Peace, the entrance to Forbidden City, its a symbol of ancient power purposely chosen to declare a new China
    When Mao and the Communists took over China in 1949, after decades of civil war and Japanese occupation, the country was in terrible shape.
  • Korean War

    North Korea attacked South Korea by crossing the boundaries of the two regions.
    Beginning as a conflict two gonverments were competing for control.
    People took sides and helped the other country.
    It lasted until June 27, 1953.
    Because of the war, over 2.5 million civilians, both North and South Koreans, were killed. Also over 1 million soldiers lost their lives during the war.
  • Berlin Wall

    Made by the Russians to block out the allied sector of West Berlin.
    It stood until 1989.
    Russia was given control over a part of Germany which is now known to be as East Germany.
  • Cuban Missle Crisis

    The closest the world came to ever having a nuclear war.
    The United States had nuclear bombs ready if the island was going to be attacked.
    President John F. Kennedy informed the world that the Soviet Union was building secret missile bases in Cuba.
    Instead of bombing the place Kennedy wanted to go over there and remove the bases and their deadly comtents.
    The Russian Premier conceded to President Kennedy's demands by ordering all Soviet supply ships away from Cuban waters.
