  • Berlin Airlift

    In June 1948 Soviet Union, in an effort to force the US and Allies to withdraw from Berlin, blocked all access into the city by land and sea. US and Allies provided much needed supplies to Berlin by air, flying nearly 300,000 flights, delivering 400,000 tons of food, fuel and medicine. By May 1949 the Soviet Union relented and allowed the US and Allies access into Berlin.

    Communist leader Mao Zedong defeats nationalist leader Chiang Kai-Shek in an off and on civil war for over 30 years. Chiang Kai-Shek flees to the island of Taiwan and Mao Zedong established China as a communist state.

    The Korean peninsula is divided in two after WW2. Communist North Korea invades democratic South Korea in hopes to reunite the nation. UN forces supported mainly by the United States helps to push back North Korean and allied Chinese troops. An armistice is signed dividing the communist North Korea and democratic South Korea along the 38th parallel. Both Koreas are technically still in an active state of war.
