The Truman Doctrine aided foreign countries such as Greece and Turkey and protected them from communism. Containment was the process in which the spread of communism was stopped and held to one area. -
Marshal Plan
The Marshal Plan was the European Recovery Program. It followed President Truman's speech to congress and can be termed "Truman Doctrine-Phase ll." The Marshal Plan was devised in response to the economic ruin and political chaos in many European countries following WW2. -
Berlin Airlift
The Berlin Airlift was the first battle of the Cold War. It was when Western countries delivered much needed food and supplies to the city of Berlin through the air because all other routes were blocked by the Soviet Union. The soviets did not think that the airlift would work. They felt that the people of Berlin would give up. -
Korean War
The Korean War was fought between South Korea and North Korea. The leader and prime minister of North Korea was Kim ll-Sung. North Korea's chief commander was Choi Yong-Kun. The war ended with little resolution. The countries divided today and North Korea is still ruled by a communist regime. -
Vietnam War
The Vietnam War was fought between communist North Vietnam and the government of Southern Vietnam. The North was supported by communist countries such as the People's Republic of China and the Soviet Union. -
The Space Race
The Space Race began after the Soviet launch of Sputnik 1 on 4 October 1957. The term Space Race started as a comparison to the arms race. The Space Race became an important part of the rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War. Space technology became an extra important area in this rivalry, because of possible military uses. -
Berlin Wall
The Berlin Wall was built by the communist government of East Berlin in 1961. The wall separated East Berlin and West Berlin. It was built in order to prevent people from fleeing East Berlin. In many ways it was the perfect symbol of the Iron Curtain that separated the democratic western countries and the communist countries of Eastern Europe throughout the Cold War. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
The Cuban Missile Crisis, also known as the October Crisis of 1962, the Caribbean Crisis, or the Missile Scare, was a 13-day confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union initiated by the American discovery of Soviet ballistic missile deployment in Cuba.
