Russian Revolution
The Russian revolution in 1917 was actually two revolutions; one taking place in February and the other taking place in October. In October, the provisional government was overthrown, giving the soviets all of the power. Soviets were supported by communists who took over and made the country, and the country's territories communist. -
Potsdam Conference
Stalin, Churchill, and Truman gathered to decide who gets to rebuild what part of Germany. The conference was to create postwar order, peace treaty issues, and to reverse or repair the effects of the war. This gave Russia the ability to make east Germany communist and block off Berlin. -
Atomic Bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima
We bombed Japan for two reasons. One, to get them to Surrender and two, to show Russia what we can do. This lead to the surrender of Japan and and Russia knowing what we're capable of. -
Iron Curtain
Divided Europe from 1945-1992. Russia's blockade led to those countries to become communists.However, Berlin stayed capitalistic which led to the airlifts. -
Truman Doctrine
A foreign policy with the purpose to stop Russia from expanding. The doctrine led to NATO and is marked as the start of the cold war. -
The Marshall Plan
The Marshall plan was a plan designed to fight communism. The plan stated that the US was to help any country fighting against communism. This was The USA's way of indirectly fighting communism. -
Berlin Blockade
Since Berlin was in Russia's territory Russia cut off Berlin's resources. The USA and England began flying planes with supplies for Berlin over Russia. Russia didn't want to be the aggressor so they let the planes fly peacefully above. the Berlin blockade lasted from June 24, 1948 to May 12, 1949 -
NATO
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization, or the North Atlantic Alliance, is an alliance formed by a total of 29 North American and European countries. It is an intergovernmental military alliance to have a mutual defence in response to an attack by any external party. -
Soviet bomb
After the Bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima the Russians started to try to make the the atomic bomb with the Soviet Bomb Project. At the Semipalatinsk Test Site the Russians successfully tested a bomb on August 29, 1949. -
Hollywood Ten
Ten individuals were found for contempt of Congress and blacklisted after refusing to answer questions about their accused involvement with the Communist Party. These blacklists took place from the late 40's to the late 50's. -
The Korean War
North Korea invaded South Korea With Russia supporting communist North Korea and the United States of America supporting capitalist South Korea. The fighting ended on 27 July 1953, when an armistice was signed this warranted the return of prisoners and to have the demilitarized zone to separate North and South Korea. -
Khruschev Takes over
Khruschev is responsible for the de-stalinization of the Soviet Union. He was also the first secretary of the communist party. He was removed from power in 1964. -
Eisenhower’s Massive Retaliation Policy
Its a policy that has us retaliate in a much greater force. the goal of massive retaliation is to deter another state from initially attacking. -
Army-McCarthy hearings
The McCarthy hearings were held by the US Senate's Subcommittee on Investigations and were a series of hearings in 1954 to investigate conflicting accusations between the US army and the US senator. The claim that the army made was that the Chief Committee Counsel Roy Cohn pressured the Army to give treatment to G. David Schine, however, McCarthy argued that this accusation was revenge for his recent investigations of suspected Communists and security risks in the Army. -
Warsaw Pact
It was a treaty that was signed in Warsaw as a balance for NATO however there was never conflict between them directly. The treaty established Russia's power over eastern Europe. -
Hungarian Revolution
The Hungarians revolted against the Marxism-Leninism government that ran their country. It started out as a student protest and then attracted thousands to the revolution. The Hungarians lost to the Communist Soviet Union on November 10. -
U2 Incident
The US was sending spies over Russia. A U-2 was then shot down by soviet union military forces. The pilot survived and the Soviet Union charged him with espionage and he was sentenced to 10 yrs in prison. -
Berlin Wall
The Berlin wall was built to separate communist east Germany from capitalist West Berlin and to stop people from just crossing over into the capitalistic society. The Allies began to airlift supplies to West Berlin because the road that got them their supplies was cut off by the wall. The wall divided Berlin from 1961-1989. -
Bay of Pigs
The bay of pigs was an invasion of Cuba that failed. The CIA sent trained Cubans to overthrow the communist power that controlled Cuba. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
The Cuban Missile Crisis was the US finding missiles in communist Cuba. Eventually, after a 13 day negotiation, we got the Soviet Union to pull their missiles out of Cuba and we pulled ours out of turkey -
Detente under Nixon
It was supposed to bring peace between the US and the USSR but it failed and historians are still debating how long the peace lasted. -
The Vietnam War
the Vietnam War was a war that we joined in fighting against Northern Vietnam of which was supported by the Soviet Union and China. It lasted 19 years, ending on on 30 April 1975, and resulted in three countries becoming communist. -

It was an attempt to end the cold war. It was made so that any country fighting against a communist power would be backed by the US. -

The Fall of the Berlin Wall
The Berlin Wall was opened on November 9, 1989 and the demolition began on 13 June 1990 and finished in 1992. This signified the end of the cold war.
