Formation of the UN
The Allies of WWII attempt to make peace by signing the charter forming the United Nations. The purpose was to create security between nations. Military intervention was the last resort. This is an example of Cultural because it shows humanity and culture throught different countries and despite how different some nations are, they all desire peace. This was the beginning of the cold war before thing when down hill. -
Europe and Japan achieve dynamic economic growth
While the communist countries China and Soviet Union were slowly breaking up, Japan and Europe's economy was growing rapidly. This was reducing their inferiority to America. This relates to the theme of economic because of the extreme rise in economy for many less powerful countries. They took advantage of the breakup between China and Soviet Union. Relating to the Cold War because the communist party was slowly dying in this time period. -
John F. Kennedy becomes president of the US
John F. Kennedy was the 35th president of the United States of America. He was the youngest man to ever been elected into office at the age of 43. This event is related to politics because JFK was a political leader. This impacted the Cold War because after Russia looked into installing nuclear missiles in Cuba, Kennedy imposed a quarantine on all offensive weapons bound for Cuba. -
Soviet Union detonates "Tsar Bomba"
The Tsar Bomba was the was the most powerful thermonuclear weapon ever tested. Originally made to have 100 megatons, but was later reduced to 50 megatons. It was 3,300 times more powerful than the Hiroshima bombing. This event relates to the GASPIRE theme of intellectual because it was the most powerful bomb ever created. It must take a lot of thinking and science to do that. This affected the Cold War because it frightened many and led to the US, UK and USSR signing the Partial Test Ban Treaty. -
US president JFK delivers "Ich bin ein Berliner" speech in Berlin
58% of Berlin's population came out to see the US president in Germany. JFK arrived for the purpose of spreading good will and building unity between American allies. Kennedy announced that West Berlin was a symbol of freedom in a cold war threatened war. This event relates to the GASPIRE theme of social because JFK was delivering a motivating message to the people of Germany. Overall, it gave the people a large confidence boost who were alarmed by the recently built Berlin wall. -
Religion and the Cold War
Christianity was a powerful and important part of millions of peoples lives on both sides. Although this was a very difficult theme to relate to, religion influenced the war because some religions in specific like Christianity brought some people together. -
JFK is shot and killed
While visiting in Dallas, US president JFK is shot and killed. Potential theories say that communist parties may have been involved in the killing. This event is related to psychological because it stunned everyone around the world when the word got out. It put a lot of stress on many especially during the Cold War. This related to the Cold War because JFK was passionate about beating the Russians. -
Gulf of Tonkin
North Vietnamese naval ships shot two American ships. Americans had entered Vietnamese territory. US president Lyndon B. Johnson made the announcement. This relates to the theme of geographic because the US had entered onto Vietnamese territory causing it. These brought the US into the Vietnam war furthering the Cold War. -
Eero Aarnio Chair
Influenced by many aspects, interior designer Eero Aarnio, designed a chair that would later become iconic. Charles and Ray Eames became the first to experiment with fiberglass. The new materials offered mass manufacture and allowed designers to challenge the traditional ideas of rigidity. The plastic chair was a regular focus of war design. Related to the GASPIRE theme of art, the Cold War had a large influence on the design within the house and outside the house. -
Sino-Soviet Border Conflict
A confrontation between two powerful communist countries. A firing begins between both at a border outpost on the Ussuri River in the USSR. The cause was over a dispute. This relates to the social theme of GASPIRE because it has to do with the communications between two countries. This relates to the cold war because it helped the US turn two communist parties against each other. -
US astronaut Neil Armstrong takes first steps on the moon
Saturn V rocket set to land on moon on Apollo 11 mission carrying Neil Armstrong and other astronauts. The mission lasted only 8d days but was successful. America had put the first man onto the moon. The mission was a cold war maneuver made by JFK so that NASA could overtake the Russian Space Program. This relates to the GASPIRE theme of innovation because it was the first time a human has walked on the moon and was a huge accomplishment. A few months later... (continued). -
Chile elects Salvador Allende
Allende's democratic election win was one of the biggest deals for Chile since the Cuban revolution. Nixon vowed to destroy Allende's left wing government. when Chilean forces went against him. This has to do with poltical becuse it was great news for the people and had to do with the Cold War because of its relations between US and Chile -
Nikita Khrushchev dies
Former Soviet leader, Nikita dies during his height of power. During a UN meeting, he took off his shoe and pounded it on the table in order to get people's attention. After the war between USSR and US threat, Nikita lost a lot of support from home. This theme relates to Psychological because not only him but many of his supporters were affected after he died since he was a bright and colorful figure during the cold war. -
Current Event: Putin calls on American business to help restore dialogue between US and Russia
In order to help restore conversation between Russia and the US, Russian President Putin has asked US businesses for help. Earlier he has said the foundations of relations between the two countries has gone down hill in recent years. This relates to the cold war because the two main countries involved still do not have a perfect relationship even today after many years have passed. -
Interview with my stepdad, Joe
My stepdad, Joe, who is 40 years old answered some of my interview questions regarding the Cold War. I was surprised by how much information he knew. I chose him because I knew he would have funny answers and grew up as a teen in the late 80's.
