The Truman Doctrine

His original request was specifically for $400 million to assist both Greece and Turkey, which Congress approved. -
The Berlin Blockade

The Berlin Blockade was an attempt by the Soviet Union to limit the ability of Great Britain, France, and the US to travel to their parts of Berlin, which were located within Russian occupied East Germany. Ultimately, the western powers introduced an airlift that had lasted a year, and delivered supplies that was much needed and relief to West Berlin. The blockade was the first major aspect of the Cold War and was a reason for future conflict over the city of Berlin. -
The Marshall Plan

The Marshall Plan had effectively sparked economic recovery, meeting its goal of ‘restoring the confidence of the European people in the economic future of their own countries and of Europe. -
The Hydrogen Bomb

The Hydrogen bomb was the United States first thermonuclear weapon, and it gave them an advantage in the nuclear arms race with the Soviet Union. The Hydrogen bomb had been about 1,000 times more powerful than conventional nuclear devices. Later on, the Soviet Union caught on with the new military technology and exploded a thermonuclear device the following year and later on, seven nations had constructed hydrogen bombs. -

The Vietnam War was a long, costly and divisive fight against the communist government of North Vietnam, South Vietnam and its ally, the United States. The battle became more intense due to the ongoing Cold War. More than 3 million people were killed, and most were Vietnamese civilians. -

The United States Congress passed legislation introducing the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). With NASA being established, it indicated that the US was committed to winning the Space Race against the Soviet Union. Later on, NASA developed with the Space Race, and President John F. Kennedy announced that the United States should set a goal of putting a man on the moon by the end of the decade. -
The Bay of The Pigs

The Bay of The Pigs sparked due to Fidel overthrowing General Fulgencio Batista. Over the next couple years, people from the U.S. State Department and the CIA attempted to push Castro from control. Later, the CIA launched a huge invasion of Cuba by 1,400 American trained Cubans who had escaped their homes when Castro took over. Although, the invasion didn’t go well. The invaders were severely outnumbered by Castro’s troops, and they surrendered quickly. -
The First Man in Space

The United States and the Soviet Union strongly fought to push the boundaries of the exploration of space. The Russians succeeded when they launched a small craft carrying cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin aboard the Vostok 1. His flight gave him an everlasting place in history as the first man to travel to space, and spread innovative thinking. -

When the USSR ended, it was a major event that changed the entire world. Many nations became independent and Russia had new leaders. It created a change in political views. My Grandpa felt relieved for all the countries that were now free, and for the final ending of the lasting Cold War.
