    Greek Civl War
    From 1946- 1949, Greek Communist attempted to gain control of Greece. With the help of the U.S., the communist rebellion was supressed. However, war did take place and the results ended with approximately 50, 000 casulaties. The significance of the Greek Civil War was that it helped lead to the Truman Doctrine.
  • Truman's Loyalty Program

    Truman's Loyalty Program
    Enacted in 1947, Truman's Loyalty Program took affect in the United States and was a program for all new governmental employees. Before working for the government, people were required to be investigated. The significance of this program was that many people were accussed of being communist whether or not they actually were.
  • Truman Doctrine

    Truman Doctrine
    Taking affect in 1947, the Truman Doctrine stated that the U.S. would provide- to all democratic nations in threat from either internal or external forces- political economical, and military assistance. The significance of this doctrine was that it changed the direction of they U.S foreign policy.
  • Rio Treaty

    Rio Treaty
    Signed in Brazil by the U.S with 20 other Latin American countries on Sep. 2, 1947, the Rio Treaty was a pact that if one was under attack then all were under attack as well. In order to decide what action would be taken, a two-thirds majority vote was needed but a naiton would not be required to use force without it's consent. The significance of this treaty was that it was aimed at the Soviet Union during the Cold War.
  • Brussels Pact

    Brussels Pact
    Signed in 1948 by Britain, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands, the Brussel Pact was an agreement that created a defensive alliance. The reason for this treaty was to display that states within Western Europe were capable of cooperating with each other. Its significance was that it resulted in the establishment of NATO .
  • Marshall Plan

    Marshall Plan
    Starting in 1948, the European Recovery Act (ERP) or known as the Marshall Plan provided aid to European countries from the U.S. The main goal of this plan was to fortify democracry throughout those European countries along with helping their economy recover from the World War II. The significance of the Marshall Plan was that it helped the countries who benefited from this program increase economically, industrially, and agriculturally.
  • Korean War

    Korean War
    A fued between North and South Korea begun in 1950 and lasted until 1953 when North Korea, being guided and supplied by the Soviet Union, invaded South Korea. Taking the side of South Korea, the United Sates later joined the Korean War. Resulting with thousands of casualties but no peace, Korea still remains as two seperate countries. The significance of the Korean War was that it was the first shooting confrontation of the Cold War and that the problem that caused this war are still present.
  • Atoms for peace speech

    Atoms for peace speech
    On Dec. 8, 1953, Dwight D. Eisenhower delivered a speech on why the "atom" benefits mankind. Within his speech, he said that there was a nuclear weapon race between the U.S. and Soviet Russia in which he wanted to come to an end. However, the speech was given in the United Nations. The significance of the speech was that it was given after the United Nations established Resolution 715.
  • Warsaw Pact

    Warsaw Pact
    Created in 1955 and signed in Warsaw by the Soviet Union, Albania, Poland, Romania and other countries, the Warsaw Pact is looked as a defense treaty against the NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization). This treaty calls for backup in case any member gets attacked by an external force. The significance of the Warsaw Pact was that it was seen as a threat of communistic dominance.
  • Suez Crisis

    Suez Crisis
    Starting in 1956 in the Middle East, the Suez Crisis occurred between Egypt, Great Britain, France, U.S. and Isreal. Wanting to build a dam, Gamal Abdel Nassar was approved of a loan from the U.S. and Great Britain. The loan was pulled back because Egypt had political and military ties to the Soviet Union. Nassar retaliated by talking back the Suez Canal, then Israel and France intervened by attacking Egypt with Britain. It's importancance was that Britain was no longer one of the strongests.
