    United Nations
    The United Nations was a new World Organization thataimed to bring disputes between nations before the body for peaceful settlement. They succeeeded best in fighting hunger and diseases, improving education and providing releif to disaster victims. There were fifty-one nations and it soon had almost two-hundred nations.

  • The Truman Doctrine

    The Truman Doctrine
    The Truman Doctrine was President Truman's policy of giving U.S. aid to nations threatened by Communist expansion. For example, he gave $400 million in military and economic aid to Greece and Turkey. The Marshall Plan was also a help to reduce the threat of communist revolutions. He toured Europe and saw it was in bad condition and fro 1948 to 1952 he provided $12 billion in aid to Western Europe!

  • Berlin Blockade

    Berlin Blockade
    Berlin was divided in the 1950's and West Berlin was a prosperous democratic governent and East Berlin waspoor communist government. For years, East Germans ran to West Berlin to escape communism which embarressed the Communists. Therefor, the Soviets tried to stop anyone from geting into West Berlin by creating a Berlin wall.

    North Atlantic Treaty Organization was an alliance formed in 1949 by the U.S. and western European nations to fight Soviet aggression.

  • Senator Joseph McCarthy

    Senator Joseph McCarthy
    Joseph McCarthy was senator in 1950 in Wisconsin. He claimed to have a list of 205 communist leaders in American State Department. On live television, he said that there were communists in the military, a statement like that plunged his popularity and he later commited suicide. Julius & Ethel Rosenberg started the Red Scare and were sentenced to death because there were telling the Soviets atomic secrets.

    Korean War
    The U.S. became involved in the conflict in Korea by agreeing to temporary division of Korea at the 38th parallel of latitude. Korea passed this boundry and the South and North mixed so President Truman responded by attacking. He asked the United Nations to send a military force to Korea.     Korea War Part II
    Douglas MacArthur was a general who had commanded Allied forces in the Pacific during World War II. He led the surprise attack in Incheon and it forced North Korea to retreat. He was chosen by the President to lead UN forces in Korea. Truman wanted to punish North Korea so he got the UN forces permission to have MacArthur to cross parallel into North Korea.     The Soviets made the Warsaw Pact to go against NATO. The Warsaw Pact is a military allaince, established with 1955, of the Soviet Union and other communist states in Europe.

    Vietnam War
    Ho Chi Minh was the leader of the veitcong (Vietnamese army). The golf tank resolution incresed America involvment in Vietnam. The draft suppiled soldiers to the United States miltary.

    Cuban Missile Crisis
    The Cuban Missile Crisis scared both American and Soviet officials. John F. Kennedy was the president closest to starting a full on nuclear war. Nikita Khrushchev was the ruler over Russia at this time. Fidel Castro was the leader of Cuba and Che Guevara helped him overthrow the old government. Bay of Pigs invasion was a huge embarressement for the U.S. however it helped Castro.

    National Aeronautics and Space Administration was a program created on July 29th, 1958. John F. Kennedy created NASA because he wanted to beat the Russians into space.

    The Tet Offensive
    The Tet Offensive was an attack in January 1968 were Guerrillas stormed American embassy in Saigon, the capital of South Vietnam. It was know as the Tet Offensive because it took place during Tet, the Vietnamese New Year's holiday.

    Salt Agreement
    The Salt Agreement was the an agreement between the Soviets and the U.S. to limit the amount of nnuclear weapons. Détente was the first time we had a descalation of tensions with Russia.

    Glasnost
    In 1985, Glastnost was started by Mikhail Gorbachev and it was a policy of openess. It was a practice of more open consultative government.

    Communism Collapses
    Gorbachev started policy of Glasnost which brought down Soviet Union because it was a policy of critizing to the government . Ronald Regan was the president during the fall of communism. Star Wars was a defense program started by Regan and it was somewhat based off of Star Wars movie. The USSR cease to exist after the fall of communism. The Soviet Union is not a superpower anymore because of the fall of communism.
