The Big Three met to discuss the conditions of the surrender of Germany near the end of World War II. The decided that Germany would be split into four zones. West Germany would be occupied by America, Britain and France. East Germany would be occupied by the Soviet Union. This was important because the Soviet Union had emerged as a superpower.

Winston Churchill gave his famous Iron Curtain Speech. In it, he declared that there was iron curtain across the continent of Europe. Stallin later decnounced the speech.

Containment of communism was becoming a major concern for the allies. The Truman Doctorine was introduced to give financial aid to countries who were fighting communist parties.

Stallin ordered the Berlin Blockade to block Western supplies from coming into East Germany. The United States and other countries started dropping supplies from airplanes into Berlin which was called the Berlin Airlifts. Eventually there was more supplies coming into Berlin than than there ever had been before the blockade. After 11 months Stallin called off the blockade.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was signed on April 4, 1949. It was established to create an alliance between countries. If one country was to be attacked by an external country, then the countries apart of the treaty would send aid.

In February of 1950 Senator Joseph McCarthy started spreading rumors that he had a list of other senators and leaders who were communists. This was a major part of the Red Scare. It was a threat that people took really seriously.

The Warsaw Pact was created as a counter to NATO. It was among the Soviets and other socialist countries and was important because it expanded military forces.

Sputnik 1 was launched into space by the Soviets. It was the first satellite in space. The Cold War was now about a space race too.

A failed military invasion attempt by the CIA to remove the communist government of Fidel Castro in Cuba. It was important becasue it created a lot of tension between the two countries.

In 1961 East Germany started building the Berlin Wall. It cut off West Berlin from East Berlin and was meant to decrease emmigration. It was a very significant symbol for the Cold War.

A 13 day missile scare between the United States and Cuba over the deployment of Soviets missile deployment in Cuba. It resulted the missiles being withdrawn and the US agreeing to never invade Cuba without direct provocation.

Neil Armstrong became the first person to step foot on the moon. This made America the first nation to send someone to the moon. This was important because it was a major breakthrough in the space race.

The Vietnam War ended as South Veitnam feel into the control of North Vietnam on April 30, 1975. This was very important because it was after the US had pulled out of the war and the country fell into communist control.

On November 9th, the Berlin Wall began to be torn down. East Germany was now open to West Germany again. It was now a major symbol of the war being over.

In December 1991, the Soviet Union was abolished. This was very significant becasue it resulted in the end of the Cold War.
