Red Scare
The Red Scare started in 1919. It was a fear of communism all throughout the US and other countries. Many people across the US got accused of being communist and you could actually get arrested if you were suspected of communism. Some important people of the Red Scare were the Hollywood Ten and McCarthy. -
Joseph Stalin
In 1929, Stalin came into leadership, and was the leader of the USSR until his death in 1953. He was leader during the Cold War. He was part of the Big Three, and played an important role in the war. -
Yalta conference
Leaders of the Allied forces got together and had to decide what to do with Germany after the world War. They met in Yalta, and the Big Three - Roosevelt, Churchill, and Stalin agreed to divide the country into 4. -
nuclear arms race
The Nuclear Arms Race was a race between the Soviet Union and the US to make the first nuclear bomb. The first one was made by the Manhattan Project, and Stalin was informed of this project at the Potsdam Conference in July. -
Mao Zedong
Mao Zedong was the leader of China during the Cold War. He was in office until he died in 1976. -
Potsdam Conference
This was a continued meeting of the Yalta conference. It took place it Potsdam, Germany. Truman wanted to meet with Stalin to see if he would live up to his promises he made in Yalta, but it didn't happen. -
CIA
CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) was used to collect information about foreign government. The CIA was also used to spy on the governments. The agency was more used in the 1950s. -
HUAC
The House Un-American Activities Committee has existed since the 1930s. The committee's job was to investigate all radical groups in the US, but during this time, they focused specifically on Communists. In 1947, a famous case developed. The HUAC got the names of Hollywood writers and actors to answer questions about their beliefs about Communism. The 10 that didn't answer later became known as the Hollywood 10. -
Truman Doctorine
The Truman Doctorine was President Truman's plege to promise military and economic aid to the countries threatened by communism. -
Marshall Plan
Marshall Plan, US aided 17 different countries. This bought food and farm equipment and also rebuilt factories and homes. The US offered this aid to the Soviet Union and its allies, but they refused. This aid helped the western European countries. -
Berlin Airlift
In 1948, the Soviets blocked off all supplies from Berlin. The British and American planes flew supplies from the US to Berlin. This went on through May 12, 1949 when the soviets lifted the blockade. Through the time the airlift was going on, 280,000 flights were made to Berlin. -
Berlin Blockade
Berlin blockade was when the Soviet Union cut off all supplies to West Berlin and blocked the city to make the west give in, but it led to the Berlin airlift instead. -
NATO
The US joined a military alliance with six other nations called NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. This alliance already had five other countries in it. NATO was much like the Warsaw Pact. -
Mainland China turns communist
After Mao Zedong becomes leader, mainland China becomes communist. The US still supported Nationalist China. -
Joseph McCarthy (mccarthyism, red scare)
This senator gave a speech and said that there were 205 known communists working for the US department of state. His tactic he used of charging people and scaring people by accusations of being communists became known as McCarthyism. This was all in the time of the Red Scare, the fear of communism, or being accused of being communist. -
Korea War
The war started when North Korea invaded South Korea. The US were allies with South Korea and sent troops afterwards. China helped out North Korea. The war was a tie, and North Korea didn't take over. -
Eisenhower
Eisenhower was the 34th president of the US. He led invasions in the Cold War and in WW2. -
Warsaw Pact
This alliance was created in 1955. It was an alliance of Soviet- dominated countries and the actual soviet union. It was like NATO, but all countries were controlled by the Soviet Union. -
U2 Crisis
The U2 Crisis happened around the Cuban Missile Crisis. A U2 plane was flown over to find out what kind of missiles the Soviets were using.They proved that the Soviets were lying about how many missles they had. -
Space Race
The Space Race was a competition between the US and the Soviet Union to see who could get into space first. Soviet Union won when Sputnik was launched into space on Oct. 4th 1957. NASA was established in July 1958, and the US got the first man on the moon on July 20th, 1969 -
Fidel Castro
Castro was the prime minister of Cuba. He was in charge during the Cold War, and was targeting by the US when Kennedy ordered the invasion of Cuba. -

Bay of Pigs invasion
President Kennedy led an invasion into Cuba called the Bay of Pigs invasion. It all went wrong. The U.S bombers failed to destroy Cuba's air force. Kennedy gave the ok for this invasion to happen, because the CIA predicted that an invasion in Cuba would turn Cubans against Castro, but it didn't. Kennedy didn't sent in US troops to rescue the invasion force afterwards, from fear that it would effect US-Soviet Union relations. -
Berlin Wall
The Berlin Wall was built to keep East Germans from escaping into West Berlin for freedom. It also divided the country's democratic and Communist sectors. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
This was a conflict when the USSR moved their missiles into Cuba. The US confronted the Soviet Union about the missiles after a U2 plane took pictures of the missiles and noticed that they were offensive Soviet Union missiles. -
Escalation
After the Bay of Pigs invasion, President Kennedy thought it was a good idea to aid South Vietnam. He was hestitant about sending troops to the country, but then he actually increased the number of troops being sent to SV. This was escalation, increasing US involvement in the Vietnam War. -
Tet Offensive
:a series of major attacks by Communist forces into South Vietnam. It started on August 2nd. The USS Maddox was attacked my North Vietnamese torpedo boats. The attacks continued when another US destroyer was torpedoed. The first attack was unprovoked, the second was said to be a mistake. -
Kent State
On Mayb 4, 1970, a shooting at Kent State University occured, because of some students who protested the American invasion of Cambodia that was ordered by Nixon. This shooting killed 4 students and injured nine. -
Vietnamization
This was a plan that Nixon came up with that was to turn over more of the fighting in Vietnam to the South Vietnamese, so that he could bring more US troops back to the US gradually. He thought that this would give the South Vietnamese time to stabalize an anti-communist government, and if it didn't work, then the US troops would at least be gone before the South Veitnamese government collapsed. -
