    President Franklin D. Roosevelt suffered from cerebral hemorrhage and died. Vice President Harry Truman took over after only being in office for 82 days. He had little communication with Roosevelt.

    The first atomic bomb was developed and tested in New Mexico. The first plans for the bomb was in 1939. Enrico Fermi was an Italian physicist that helped discuss the bomb.

    Ho Chi Minh Declares Independence
    Vietnam's independence was declared from France by nationalist Ho Chi Minh. The Vietnamese Declaration of Independence quoted the United States Declaration of Independence saying "All are created equal." Vietnam became communist 30 years after.

    Korea became occupied by Japan after WWII. It split at the 38th parallel and was divided into two new states. Kim Il-Sung was a communist that ran North Korea and South Korea was ran by anticommunist Syngman Rhee.

    The Truman Doctrine pledged any assistance to any country that was being threatened by communism. The Truman Doctrine established the worldwide containment of communism. Some historians call the Truman Doctrine the official start of the Cold War.

    The Marshall Plan was a plan to help Europe recover from WWII. The Plan was made by Secretary of State George Marshal and was announced at Harvard University. It included 13 billion dollars to help Europe recovery.
  • Berlin Blockade

    Berlin Blockade
    The Soviets cut off all access of the Eastern side of Berlin. This took place after the Us, Britain, and France introduced the Deutsche Mark to serve as a single currency for their zones in West Germany. The Blockade also cut off all railroad access to bring supplies into the city.

    The United States began an 11 month airlift to bring supplies into the Eastern side of Berlin by plane. There were planes constantly landing an unloading supplies for almost a year. The airlift was led by General Lucius Clay and it was called operation Vittles.

    NATO stands for North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Ten western European nations joined the USA and Canada to form NATO. NATO was an anti- Soviet military alliance that extends the threats the United States nuclear threat.

    Dwight Eisenhower announced his 'Domino Theory' on communism. The theory was that once one country is infected, they will keep falling.
  • U2 spy plane developed

    U2 spy plane developed
    The U2 spy plane was flown at such a high altitude that it was undetected from radars. It was out of range of Soviet weapons and couldn't be detected on their radar. The first U2 spy plane was flown over Moscow.

    The Space Race was a competition between the US and the USSR to see who could land on the moon first. Each side was to prove the superiority of their technology. The Soviet Union was able to launch the first satellite but the US was first to step foot on the moon.

    Sputnik was the first man made object to be launched in orbit around the Earth. It was a success in building the first satellite by the Soviet Union. Sputnik caused fear in the US and started the Space Race.

    The U2 incident was when the Soviet Union shot down the US spy plane and captured the pilot. Dwight D. Eisenhower was forced to admit that they had been flying spy missions for several years. The U2 incident raised the tensions between the two superpowers.

    The Cuban Missile Crisis was a 13 day standoff where the Soviet Union had missiles in Cuba. President John Kennedy announced that Cuba had missiles aiming at the US just 90 miles away from the border. Soviet Union leader Nikita Khrushchev agreed to remove the missiles only if the US didn't invade Cuba.
