Marshall Plan
The Marshall Plan was an American program to help aid Europe in rebuilding itself after the damage caused by World War II. This was key to Americans to help stop the spread of communism over the weakened Europpean countries. The plan took 4 years to complete. -
Creation of NATO
NATO or the North Atlantic Treaty Organization which was a political association between states across North America and Europe. Members of NATO agreed that an attack on one was an attack on all, and in response to an attack, must defend their fellow members. -
Korean War
The Korean War was between North and South Korea. North Korea invaded South Korea but was eventually pushed back to where they started. The land was split in two, North which was defended by China, and the South was supported by the United Nations. The war resulted in the division of Korea into North and South Korea, as it stands today. Divided along the 38th parallel. The North established a dictator/communist system as the South was democratic. -
Warsaw Pact
The Warsaw Pact was the USSR's response to the United Nations and NATO. Like NATO, members of the Warsaw Pact agreed on mutual defense of any member being attacked. -
Vietnam War
Vietnam War was a war between North and South Vietnam. North was communist and oftenly used guerrilla warfare as a fight strategy. Whereas South was supported by the US and used techniques such as search and destroy and airstrikes to fight and defend. US involvment was to prevent communist takeover, which failed after US was no longer active in the war due to the Case-Church Amendment. -
Sputnick Launched
Sputnick was the name of the satellite and was the first satellite to ever be launched into space, launched by the USSR. This event triggered the Space Race between the US and USSR. -
Castro Controls Cuba
Castro was a Cuban communist, who bought the idea of one party, one socialist state. US tried to remove Castro from power by the Invasion of Pigs and the US failed to do so. Castro allowed USSR to place nuclear capabilities on the island of Cuba, which led to the Cuban Missle Crisis. -
JFK Elected
Democratic President, who led events such as the Invasion of Pigs, Cuban Missle Crisis, Space Race, and earlier on in the Vietnam War. JFK bought a whole new attitude, hope, motivation, inspiration, and leadership to the table for America but was unforunately assassinated during his time of Presidency. RIP JFK -
Bay of Pigs Invasion
The Bay of Pigs was an unsuccessful US military invasion into Cuba planning to overthrow Castro, who had the invaders beat after just a few days. Significant failed invasion which was embaressing for the US. -
Building of Berlin Wall
The Berlin Wall was built by East Germany in 1961 to isolate from West Germany. The wall also marks the "Iron Curtain" separating West Europe and East Bloc. The wall prevented many emigrations for many years. -
Cuban Missle Crisis
After the US' failed attempt to overthrow Fidel Castro, Cubas leader, in the Invasion of the Bay of the Pigs, Cuba was in possession of nuclear missles, received from the USSR toprevent any more invasions. This event involved the USSR and Cuba on one side and the US on the other. The US saw the missle placements as a threat and wanted the missles to be ruled out, the crisis didnt last very long but the negotiation continued for good period of time. -
Apollo Landing
Apollo 11 was a spacecraft that landed the first humans on the moon. Apollo 11 effectively ended the Space Race between the US and the USSR, putting the US ontop. This was a major event that not only shocked the Soviets, but the entire world. -
Fall of Berlin Wall
After almost 30 years of its placement, the Berlin Wall came to a fall. It started when Hungary allowed loopholes in the walls, to help escape people, causing many issues with East Germany, many protests, and eventually to the fall of the wall. -
Collapse of the Soviet Union
The end of the Soviet Union was impacted by a declaration, stating all 15+ republics apart of the soviet become independent. Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev had resigned and handed over power to Russian President Boris Yeltsin. The Soviet flag was replaced with the Russian flag, Marking the end of the Cold War.
