Missouri Compromise of 1820
Missouri wanted to become a slave state, but then that will tip the balance of free and slave states. Congress passed a compromise that allowed it to be admitted as a slave state, and Maine would be admitted as a free state in order to maintain the balance. It also established an imaginary line on the 36°30 N lateral line. Any states north of the line will be free states while the states south will be slave states. -

The North and the South had many different opinions and interests which, in the end, lead up to the Civil War. Here are the issues.
States Rights: South - Popular sovereignty; North - National sovereignty
Slavery: South - slave labor; North - free labor
Tarrif Disputes: South - low tarrifs; North - high tarrifs
Different Economies: South - Agriculture; North - Commerce & industry
Cultural Differences: South - planter; North - industrialist -
Uncle Tom's Cabin
A novel written by Harriet Beecher Stowe, it exagerated the unjustful things that slaves experienced moving many readers. It creaed much more antislavery support in the North. 300,000 copie were sold the first year, and it ended up being one of the most influential books ever written. However both Northerners and Southerners had different views abou the book. -
Kansas Nebraska Act
An act proposed by Illinois Democratic Senator Stephen A. Douglas, it was his attempt as a northern democrat to gain the favor of the southern democrats. This act allowed the Kansas and Nebraska territories to decide about slavery through popular soveriegnty.
