Compromise of 1850 passed
It was laws that admitted California as a free state. Also wanted to create Utah and New Mexico territories and to determine if they are gonna have slavery by popular sovereignty. -
Uncle Toms Cabin published
Antislavery novel,by American author Harriet Beecher Stowe. Sold 300,000 copies within 3 months. Major influence on how the American public viewed slavery. Set the groundwork for the Civil War. -
Kansas Nebraska Act Passed
It allowed people that lived in Kansas and Nebraska to decide whether or not to allow slavery in the states. Popular Sovereignty is pretty much what it was asking. -

He went against John C Beckinridge, Buchanan won,leaving Beckinridge as vice president. He was a Pennsylvanian native.He was born on April 23, 1791. -
Dred Scott Decision
The court decided no matter if your black,free or slave,could claim U.S citizenship. Roger B. Taney wrote the decision on Dred Scott. The decision made abolitionist mad. -
John Browns Raid at Harper's Ferry
He didn't like slavery. He wanted to arm abolitionist in this act. He was born in Connecticut but raised in Ohio. -
Lincoln Elected President
Was a start to the Civil War. He was against slavery, once he was president he wanted to put a end on slavery. He was the first Republican to win president. -
South Carolina Secedes from Union
First slave state to declare its seceding. They were a source for troops of the confederate army. They hosted a number of prisoner war camps. -
Battle of Fort Sumter
Lincoln got a message from them saying they needed supplies. He sent unharmed men with supplies to the fort. Jefferson Davis sent troops(armed ones) to take over the fort. -
Battle of Bull Run
First major battle of the Civil War. Took place in Northern Virginia. Both sides lacked battle experience. -
Battle of Shiloh
Confederate leaders decided to strike before any other troops arrived. The battle lasted two days. Both suffered at least 23,000 injuries or deaths. -
Battle of Antietam
The battle got its name by the place they fought at. Key victory for the Union. About 17,000 suffered injuries. -
Battle at Fredericksburg
This battle was fought in Fredricksburg, Virginia. The battle involved nearly 200,000 combatants,which was the largest concentration of troops in any Civil War battle. About 13,000 casualties in the battle -
Emancipation Proclamation goes into effect
Over the thought of slavery. Lincoln was the one who came up with it. Banned slavery in every state besides the border state because he didn’t want them to secede from the Union. -
Battle at Chancellorsville
Fought in the Wilderness region of Virginia, Chancellorsville was General Robert E. Lee’s greatest defensive victory, an outstanding example of command partnership and the misuse of strategic initiative. It was a major battle in the civil war. The second day of the battle was more violent and bloodiest. -
Battle at Gettysburg
Fought in the town Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. After Gen. Robert E. Lee success at Chancellorsville in Virginia in May 1863, Lee led his army through the Shenandoah Valley. On the third day of battle, fighting resumed on Culp's Hill and cavalry battles raged to the east and south. But the main event was a dramatic infantry assault by 12,500 Confederates against the center of the Union line on Cemetery Ridge, known as Pickett's Charge.(it won't let me upload a picture.) -
Vicksburg Surrenders
The Confederacy is torn in two when General John C. Pemberton surrenders to Union General Ulysses S. Grant at Vicksburg, Mississippi. After defeating a Confederate force near Jackson, Grant turned back to Vicksburg. Vicksburg's loss was in many ways more important to the war. -
Sherman's March to the Sea
It was also also known as the Savannah Campaign. Followed by a successful Atlanta Campaign of May to September 1864. Sherman is actually a person that fought in the battle and named it after him. -
South Surrenders at Appomattox Court House
The Battle of Appomattox Court House was fought on the morning of April 9, 1865 it was one of the last battles of the American Civil War. At one point, Union cavalry forces under General Philip Sheridan had outrun Lee’s troops, blocking their retreat and taking approximately 6,000 prisoners at Sayler’s Creek. By April 8 the Rebels were almost completely surrounded.
