Significance: It was the first Civil War Battle to take place on Union soil. It was also the bloodiest single-day battle in American History. 22,717 wounded, dead, and missing on both sides combined. -
Emancipation Proclamation Issued

Summary: A document that Abraham Lincoln signed that granted freedom to all slaves. It wasn't passed by congress until February of 1865. -

Significance: It was an important shift in the Union's expanding their goal to reunification to also include the complete abolishment of slavery EVERYWHERE. -
Battle at Chancellorsville

Summary: The Battle of Gettysburg was the battle with the most soldiers killed. President Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address after this turning point in the war. -

Significance: It gave control of the Mississippi River to the Union. The Union was now able to control the shipments that go along the Mississippi. -
