It proved that ships were getting better over time and were advancing technologically. The Monitor was the North's ship and the Merrimack was the South's ship. Neither side won the battle, but it is considered the North's victory because the Merrimack was the first to leave. -

Loss of Ft. Fisher
Ft. Fisher was important because it supplied the Confederate Army with supplies needed to fight the Union Army during the Civil War. When the fort fell to the North, the South lost its main source of supplies. This caused the Confederate Army to weaken and eventually have to surrender to the Union Army.
