Emancipation Proclimation
The Emancipation Proclimation was a bill signed by Abraham Lincoln freeing the slaves from all the confederate slaves during the Civil War. This was the first large scale political support the blacks had gotten up to this point. -
13th Amendment
The 13th Amendment amended the Constitution allowing for the abolishment of slavery in America. This was the first step efor blacks rights in America. -
14th Amendment
The 14th Amendment was amended to the Constitution and gave blacks equal protection under the law. This helped blacks to gain respect and status among America and the whites. -
15th Amendment
The 15th Amendment was amended to the Constitution and gave any man born in the united states the right to vote. This gave the blacks yet another citizenship privilage. -
Plessy v. Ferguson
The Case of Plessy v. Ferguson was a court case which determined that segregated places must be "seperate but equal."
The was important in easing the blacks into normal citizenship and life among whites. -
Brown v. Board of Education
The Case of Brown v. Board was actually a number of cases. These cases argued that white children got better education so they wished to integrate schools. This ended with schools being forced to allow both whites and blacks and created a doorway for blacks to gain education and status among whites. -
The Murder of Emmett Till
Emmet Till was murdered by some white men while visiting Mississippi. He whistled at a white woman and very shortly wasnt seen again. after his dead body was returned to his mother, much of America saw the brutal murder he recieved. This Case in which the obviously guilty white men were set free provided America with the truths that racism was still a very serious issue. -
Montgomery Bus Boycott
The Montgomery Bus Boycott was a movement made by members of CORE and many blacks to Boycott riding the segregated buses. This was a major step in silent protesting for blacks and was successful seeing as the bus companies lost much of their business with the blacks not riding. -
Greensboro Sit-ins
The Greensboro sit-ins were a series of nonviolent protests which led to the Woolworth's department store chain changing its policy of racial segregation. this was another successful silent protest to the racist whites. -
Freedom Rides
The freedom rides were silent protests on intra-state bus segregation. The widely publicized event gave blacks the support they needed to really change their political position in America. -
March on Washington
The March on Washington was the largest rally against the government to date. This gave the Government the push it needed to change to racial inequality in America. -
Civil Rights Act of 1964
The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was a piece of legislation in the United States that outlawed major forms of discrimination against African Americans and women, including racial segregation. This was what all the work the blacks did was for and they accomplished racial equality
