David dreams of a city with tall buildings and flying vehicles. David informs his older sister Mary of these dreams, she makes him promise not to tell anyone. These Dreams are the beginning of his telepathic journey. -

The One in Which David Met Sophie
David meets Sophie near the river, Sophie and David play on the 'slide' and Sophie gets her foot stuck. David offers to help her get it unstuck, Sophie is reluctant. When she finally agrees to David's aid, he discovers that she has an extra toe, the Wender's allow David to be Sophie's friend as long as he doesn't inform his father or the inspector of Sophie's Condition. -

The One With the Argument
David somehow got a splinter and he pulls it out himself, causing it to bleed quite a bit. He attempts to bandage it himself, failing, his mother notices and helps him. As he apologizes for interrupting her work he states, "I Could've done it myself if I had another hand." (pg. 26). His father over hears the statement and get extremely angry, accusing David of wishing himself a mutant. "...You deliberately wished yourself a mutant... You, My son, wishing himself a blasphemy..." (pg. 27) -

The One When David Dreams of Sophie
The night following David and Joseph's argument, David dreams of his father killing Sophie like he did a mutant animal. David's dreams always have a way of foretelling the story. -

The One when David Gets Caught
David was chatting away with Rosalind telepathically, supposedly alone. Uncle Axel soon finds David, asking him who's hes talking too. David reveals that he was speaking to Rosalind who was at home. Uncle Axel makes David promise to keep his conversations in his head and to not tell anyone about his conversations. "I want you to keep it a secret. I want you to promise that you will never, never tell anyone else what you have told me- never...." (pg. 30) -

The One with the Horses
Joseph and Angus argue over Angus' overly large horses, adding to the feud between the two. -

The One When We Flashed Back
In This scene we flashed back to one of the many Fringes raids that have happened in Waknuk. As soon as the news of the raid reached David's ears, he dropped all that he was doing to see what was happening. He quickly learned that the Fringes People were nothing like the stories and looked absolutely normal. Joseph managed to capture one who looked particularly like the Waknuk leader, except with longer limbs. The Fringe eventually escaped, but the incident was burned into David's Brain. -

The One with the Goodbye
Due to the event with Alan, the Wender's now have to leave Waknuk, unnoticed. The pack all of their belonging and ready themselves to leave. During a tearful farewell, David begs the Wender's to bring him along. The know they can't because of David's father, and ask him to stay with the house overnight to give them a better chance of escape. -

The One with the Beating
As David returns home after the Wender's farewell, he enters to see his father and the Inspector awaiting him. The Inspector calmly asks David if he'd been keeping Sophie's mutation secret and if he'd known about it. David's father eventually gets increasingly frustrated and pulls David into his room; beating him violently with a whip. Davids gives in and tell them everything. -

The One In Which Sophie Gets Caught
David and Sophie were merely catching small shrimp on the shore when Alan Ervin shows up. In a rush, Sophie manages to put on her shoes in time, though a wet footprint showcasing six toes remains on the rock she was sitting on. After Alan notices this hint of Sophie's mutation he becomes increasingly interested in the girl, in his attempts at Sophie, David tackles him, starting a fight. Sophie Wacks him on the head hard enough to knock out, ending the encounter. -

The One with the Runaway
After the event with Sophie, David consults with Uncle Axel of his plans to run away. Uncle Axel give David a worthy piece of advive, "if you run away from a thing just because you don't like it, you won't like what you find either, but running to a thing, that's a different matter." pg. 57. Axel then proceeds to tell David about the very Godless world, about the pale people sand the charred land. Uncle Axel also tells David of faith and how the true image is unknown. -

The One Far Far Away
Uncle Axel the proceeds to tell David of his adventures around the world. He speaks of pale tribes and charred lands beyond Labrador. He speaks of how the rest of the world is 'godless' and how the true image is unknown and it's only our interpretation that is the norm. In the end David decides not to run away quite yet. -

The One with the Others
After Uncle Axel's tale about the world far from Waknuk, David reveals that there is other children besides David and Rosalind who can speak through telepathy. " 'How many of you' he repeated, 'eight', I told him, 'there were nine but one stopped around a month ago.'" pg. 65. In the end David decides not run, quite yet. -

The One with the Birth
In Waknuk pregnancy is not something to boast about; The arrival of David's sister Petra was not spoke about until after a normalcy certificate is granted. Unfortunately for Joseph, the inspector is busy that day and couldn't come until afternoon frustrating Joseph greatly. The two babies previous Petra were both considered mutants, giving Emily on last chance. After careful and long inspection, Petra receives a certificate. -

The One with Aunt Harriet
Shortly after the announcement of Petra's birth, Aunt Harriet arrives to visit, bringing a child of her own. In the beginning, Emily is overjoyed to see her sister and the child, that is until Harriet suggest they switch children briefly until a normalcy certificate is granted. Harriet's baby, had an unspecified mutation described as "it's such a little thing you see, nothing much." pg. 70. Joseph and Emily throw Harriet out, the next day the baby is gone and Harriet had drown in the river. -

The One with Introductions
David, Rosalind and the other six Telepaths decide that it's best if they introduce themselves to each other. The group is made up of Rosalind, David, Michael, Sally, Katherine, Mark, Rachel, and Anne. Michael also attends a school in which they teach further education, he begins to teach the telepaths about math, science, and so on. -

The One with The Tribulation
David and Uncle Axel have a conversation on the Old people and why god sent tribulation upon them. Most of the people want to rebuild what the old people lost, but Uncle Axel argues that, that was the reason tribulation came in the first place. Uncle Axel also points out what makes a man, "A wax figure could have all that and he'd still be a wax figure wouldn't he?" as well as, "what makes man man is mind; it's not a thing, it's a quality...." (pg. 79-80) -

The One with Petra's Powers
Petra became the golden child, everyone including Joseph couldn't help but smile in her presence. One day they were harvesting when David got a loud sound in his head, "a demand pulling like a fish hook in my mind." (pg.83). David finds Rosalind also running towards the source of the pull; they both find Petra, hanging onto a bush in the river, nearly drowning. They figure out that it was Petra calling; they easily avoid questions by stating that they could hear screaming. -

The One with Old Jacob
It was a bad season for deviations that year, David runs into Old Jacob. Old Jacob goes on to rant about how 'back in his day' all deviations were killed and that younger generation is lazy and doesn't care about deviation rates. He also states that tribulation rates would be much lower if they simply killed all mutants. -

The One with the Wedding
Anne announces that she is going to marry Alan Ervin. The telepaths argue with her; they don't want her to marry for the safety of the group. Anne decides to stop answering to think pictures and cuts off any connection to the group, attempting to live like a normal. Uncle Axel suggests Killing her, much to everyone's disagreement. A few months after the wedding Alan is found dead, Anne later hangs herself out of grief, leaving a letter to expose the group. -

The One with Petra's Powers (Part 2)
Petra's decides to go out riding in the forest on her pony one day. She send out a cry for help, causing all of the telepaths tol race t the clearing in the forest to find her. Rosalind, Michael and David -

The One with Thought Shapes
David Attempts to teach Petra how to communicate telepathically. At first Petra is awful, but then, David explains it to her better. "This Time make a little think Picture; a really little one ever so far away, in soft pretty colours; do it slowly and gently, as if you were making it out of cobwebs." (pg. 113). David also learns that Petra can communicate with people who are far away. -

The One With Alan Ervin's Death
In Cghapter Eleven we also learn that Uncle Axel killed Alan Ervin, Anne's husband. He reason with David, Uncle Axel noticed that Alan was becoming curious and disgusted with Rosalind, Rachel, Petra and David in church; chatter began to spring. That night, Michael informs David and Rosalind that it would be wise to prepare to run. -

The One Where David Actually Runs Away
David packs few things, one night Michael gives word that Katherine and Sally have been captured and tortured. David, Petra, and Rosalind flee. Along the journey, Rosalind kills a man that was following them. Petra manages to connect with a women from far south-west, a place called Zealand, leading them in the direction of the fringes. The Chapter ends with a man on a horse coming towards the group. -

The One with Sealand
The Trio continue their adventure south-west, stopping to sleep. Petra talks to the mysterious Sealand women while David and Rosalind sleep, learning that everyone can speak with think pictures over there. Petra also explains to David and Rosalind how strong her think pictures are. The chapter ends with David getting wacked in the head. -

The One with The Sealand Women
David and Rosalind also learn that, they too, can talk to the Sealand women. She Explains that tribulation came because when society became complicated, people couldn't handle emotions and chaos reigned. She explains that she will be coming to help the group. -

The One with Great Uncle Spiderman
The group is captured by fringes people, leading David to meet his Uncle Gordan, or as David refers to him, Spiderman. He goes on to explain that he lost his certificate at the age of four and was sent to the fringes to avoid death. He tells David his plan to destroy Waknuk and their leader. He also tells David that he'll keep the girls for 'breeding', David proceeds to punch him, getting him kicked out of the tent and left in the woods. -

The One with Sophie, Again
In this chapter David meets Sophie again, she seems to have grown as a person and helps recuperate David back to full health. -

The One in Which Sophie Meets Rosalind
Rosalind and Petra are rescued from Gordan's grips and Sophie removes the cross on Rosalind's dress. Arrows begin to fall and the Sealand women informs the trio that she's on her way. They meet up with Michael once again, although getting caught in a web which is hard to escape from. -

The Last One
The Sealand women arrives, rescuing the group, although Sophie, Gordan, Joseph, Sally, and Katherine are all dead. She arrives on a flying machine which does not have enough fuel to retrieve Rachel. They fly away and David recognizes the city.
